It was November 15, 1996 as Makoto ran up the stairs to the rooftop of the Chicago Police Department. He felt a sudden wave of nervousness while running. As Makoto reached the top, his face turned pale as he looked at the Jester.
“I can't believe it...” Makoto says while shaking. The rest of Unit 12 ran up the stairs with their guns pointed and aimed at The Jester. Makoto felt a feeling of despair come his way and stick to him. It was a situation he never wanted to be in. It was a choice he never wanted to make.
~1 week earlier~
Three detectives from Unit 12 pulled up on the scene at Hilton Hotel and looked at the caution tape around the doors. Monique ducked under the tape as she stepped into Room 13.
“Hey this is our case so get OUT!”a detective from Unit seven says.
“Well by the Chief we do have this case.”
Makoto pushed the detective to go see the body.
Monique caught a whiff of iron. Her eyes widened at the dreadful scene seen in front of her. A dark red liquid splattered all over the white wall and was covering a cold, lifeless, cut up body. There was blood all around the bed sheets, the TV, and even the closet. Makoto and Yuri walked in with a slight look of disgust, but they quickly wiped their faces to regain their coolness. Makoto heard footsteps as Detective Gordon as he walked outside the room and called the Chief for clarification.
“What happened here?” Monique asked one of the detectives near the scene.
“30 year old Sanchez Quinones was found slaughtered. We haven’t figured out what weapon was used yet,” the detective said.
“Search for fingerprints on the body and the doorknobs,” Yuri told the forensic team. Monique searched all around the room to try and find anything that could be linked to the murder. She looked around and saw a playing card on the table.
“Look at this,” she said.
“A joker card with blood? I don't understand,” Yuri said seriously.
“The killer must be a little crazy, huh,” Makoto said with a smile. Yuri’s spine shivered and he felt a huge gust of wind coming from the doorway. Yuri took a better look at the card, and he suddenly felt two big hands pushing him to the side.
“Move,” said Gordon rudely.
“What do you think about this?” Monique asked.
“It’s probably all a part of their plan,” Detective replies. Monique, Yuri and Makoto looked at him with a blank expression.
“Whose plan?” Makoto said, confused.
“The Jester…”
“Well who’s that?”
“They’re a mass murderer that's been killing for years. At each scene, they leave a playing card
near the body. We’ve been trying to catch them for years and have been unsuccessful.”
“So, playing cards are almost like...his trademark?” Yuri questioned.
“I guess you could say that,” Gordon exclaims.
Monique walked to the witness and questioned them about what they saw. The witness was a frightened maid. She had a lifeless look in her eyes as she stared into nothing. Monique asked what happened without trying to trigger anything in the maid.
“It was around 8:30 AM when I walked in to finish cleaning to start my job for the day. As I walked to the door and reached out my hand to open the handle, I suddenly just stopped and froze, scared to move forward. When I got the courage to open the door, that's when I saw it. A room filled with blood splattered over the walls with a body on the ground.”
As she finished her review of what happened, she started to shake as tears fell down her cheeks thinking back at the frightening memories.
Monique saw the stream of tears fall down from the maids face to her lap. Feeling sympathetic she took the maid out to get some fresh air. While Monique was comforting the maid, Makoto and Yuri decided to take a closer look at the crime scene. There were blood smears everywhere spelling out words and sentences.
“DEATH , DIE , HAHA, CLUE, KILL ALL, WELCOME TO THE COURT,”
But one stood out to them the most. It was the biggest and most smeared. It read, “Play with me.” After reading this both Makoto and Yuri suddenly smelled something horrid. They had just now realized how the room had a smell of rotten blood and the stench was too much to handle. In an attempt to get away from the odor, Yuri motioned his hand towards the door.
“Let's step outside and check up on Monique and that maid.” Yuri said as a way to get the horrible things out of their minds.
Makoto and Yuri were in the elevator full of silence.
“Monique seems pretty stressed, you should try and help her take her mind off things.”
“I don't think it's the right time yet, we are in the middle of a serious case.” Makoto said while looking down at the ground.
“Y’know, if you don't take your chance while you have it, some other guy is going to snatch her up.”
“I'll try when the time's right and more appropriate, we should focus on this case.”
As the elevator reached its stop, they got off and saw Monique sitting by the front desk while drinking water. Yuri and Makoto looked at her from afar. They could see the awful and disgusted look in her eyes.
“Hey Monique, you alright?” Makoto and Yuri asked.
She sat there in silence just staring at the table. Makotos shoved her a little to get her attention.
“Ah, sorry. It's just this whole thing has just stressed me out a bit.”
Yuri knudges Makoto, signaling him to take a chance.
“Hey Monique, would you like to go somewhere like the movies to get your mind off things?”
“I think that would be a wonderful idea,” she smiled
Makoto’s cheeks turned a shade of light red as she said that. He was honestly surprised that she agreed.
“Alright love-birds, let's get back to this case.”
Yuri motioned to go back upstairs. As they all entered the elevator into the room, all the anxiety suddenly came rushing back as they saw the room again. They checked the room more thoroughly. Yuri checked under the couch and found a note.
“Guys I found a note, come check it out.” Yuri said.
The 2 other agents looked at Yuri and walked over to his side of the room. They looked above Yuri, they had seen he had a piece of paper, and on the sheet written in red ink “1750w119no.17”. Makoto stared at the paper confused
“What could that mean?”
He said as he stared at the paper intensely. The other two agents were too busy and lost in thought trying to figure out this code, they didn't even hear Makoto’s question. It was about 7 minutes of silence until Yuri spoke up.
“I got it!”
Makoto and Monique looked up rapidly as they heard Yuri. The two agents synchronized in words,
“What did you figure out?”
“What if these first 8 characters are an address and the Jester wants us to go there. And we’ll figure out what the others mean at the place.”
Without letting his 2 friends/co-workers speak, Yuri grabs both of their hands and pulls them out the door and into the elevator. They made it to the lobby and eventually outside into the car. With Yuri hopping into other driver seats, implying he is driving, Makoto and Monique hopped into the backseat without questioning him.
After a 45 minute drive, the agents ended up in front of a Chili’s. Confused and stunned, they stood there. While standing, an idea popped into Monique's head.
“What if the address led us here and Jester wants us to sit down at table number 17.”
“Good idea!” Makoto said with excitement.
They walked towards the table.
“Well Yuri and Makoto go check around to see if anyone is staring at us or looking suspicious. The killer may be looking from afar waiting for us to find the clue.”
Makoto scanned the room with his eyes. Yuri went outside to take a quick look at their surroundings. Monique checked the table and found a joker card taped under it.
Monique read the card “The Waitress has an order for you. Say you want to order the ‘Jester’s Joke.’ If you ask her who she saw and if I find she said anything about me…She knows what’ll happen.” Monique looked around worried and tense.
“Excuse me, can I place my order?” Monique asked.
“Sure thing honey, what can i get you?” The waitress asked. Monique leaned in closely.
“I would like the Jester’s Joke,” she whispered.
The waitress's face froze and she stepped back cautiously. She went back to the kitchen and came out with a food platter. Monique opened the platter and a red velvet cupcake was centered with a strawberry puree that resembled the blood from the victim. Monique turned her head slowly and gave the waitress an analyzing look. The waitress abruptly stopped and left the table. Monique noticed that the waitress was looking at something before she had left, so she decided to look from the waitress’s point of view. Monique saw nothing and just brushed it off. Yuri and Makoto walked back inside after surveying the area without anything good.
“Monique, did anything happen?” Yuri asked.
“I got something from the killer. It was in this cupcake” Monique said
“Well what do you suppose we do?” Makoto asked
“Let's find out what's with this cupcake,” Monique said.
Monique grabbed a sharp silver butter knife from her set of utensils. She precisely and gracefully cut down the cupcake in half..Monique finds a razor blade with blood over it packed inside a small plastic container.
“This must be the murder weapon that was used or they killed someone else,” Yuri said.
“Either way he’s sick and he needs to rot in jail,” Makoto said with anger and disgust.
“Well let's stop sitting around and take this to the forensic office,” Monique said. Everyone left the building feeling confident about this. Monique felt bad and had an awful stomachache. She started to clench her stomach hard.
“You alright?” Makoto asked. Makoto had escorted to the car carefully and sat her in the passenger seat. Yuri walked towards the Driver’s seat and sat in it.
“Monique, wanna go home or to the hospital?. Yuri asked.
“I’ll go with you guys...” Monique said sternly.
“Well that's not an option,” Yuri said.
“Well it's the one I'm choosing,'' Monique said. Makoto sat besided Monique and calmed her down.
“Just take me home,” Monique said quickly. Yuri drove quickly to Monique’s house.
“Makoto, can you go to the forosenic office for us? I’ll stay here with Monique,” Yuri asked.
“Yuri well can i-”
“Makoto time is ticking and you’re still right here.” Makoto slouched out of the room and he felt betrayed.
He rushed to the car with the new piece of evidence. He rapidly drove to the Forosenic office and handed in the piece of evidence.
“Well what can I do for you?” the scientist asked.
“I have a piece of evidence and I need the fingerprints off this razor.” Makoto responded.
“I need an I.D to know that you are a part of-” Makoto had quickly pulled out his badge and asked if he could go ahead and get this processed.

~~~5 days later~~~
The chief walked towards Unit 12 with a file in his hand.
“This just came from the forensic office, they said this was from Makoto of Unit 12,” the chief stated.
“Yeah we got a lead and we think it may have some fingerprints on it,” Makoto and Yuri said in sync.
Makoto grabbed the z and went over to Monique’s desk.
“Well what’s on it?” Monique questioned. Monique grabbed the file abruptly and hurriedly opened it.
Makoto reads over the paper and he notices something…..
“Yuri tried to get the evidence-” Makoto stopped himself and swiftly walked towards the chief office. Makoto looks behind Yuri talking to Monique and he starts talking to the chief.
“Yuri tried to get the evidence and he lied by using my name,” Makoto said.
“Where's your evidence? We need some so we can actually do something,” Chief exclaimed. Makoto handed the file to the Chief and pointed directly at the middle of the report. “Yuki Hatake was trying to gain access to this piece of evidence. We denied all access.”
“Well is this good enough?” Makoto asked. The chief nodded his head. He went to Yuri and placed him in handcuffs.
“CHIEF, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?” Yuri said with a cold look in his eyes.
“GET OF OFF ME!”
“Yuri Hatake of Unit 12, you are hereby under arrest for tampering evidence and misuse of police authority. You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to an attorney and if you cannot afford an attorney one will be appointed for you. If you waive these rights and talk to us, anything you say may be used against you in court,” Chief said.
“STOP, I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. THIS IS ALL WRONG. THE JESTER IS TRYING TO SET US UP!” Yuri screamed as he tried to break free. In a desperate attempt to break free, Yuri kicks and screams like a child.
“Funny. you're acting like your demeanor, a joke,” Monique said with a rude tone.
“It’s funny actually. He fooled us this whole time without any of us realizing,” Makoto said with his head down and a frowned face underneath.
“Now that I think about it, it all comes together. Yuri always knew what the Jester was talking about when no one else did. He always directed us in the way he wanted to go.” Monique stated.
“STOP!” Yuri screamed as he broke his handcuffs and got away from the chief.
As soon as he had gotten free, Yuri grabbed Monique and started running towards the roof. With Monique being injured, she was completely defenseless. Makoto knew this, and it scared him to the point where he could just die.
“HURRY, STOP HIM!” Makoto screamed.
Yuri and Monique made it to the roof, and Makoto and Unit 12 were not far behind. Makoto ran up the stairs to the rooftop of the Chicago Police Department. He felt a sudden wave of nervousness when running. Makoto reached the top, and his face turned pale as he looked at the Jester.
“I can't believe it...” Makoto said while shaking. The rest of Unit 12 ran up the stairs with their guns pointed and aimed at The Jester. Makoto felt a feeling of despair come his way and stick to him. It was a situation he never wanted it to be in. It was a choice he never wanted to make. Yuri had himself and Monique at the edge of the roof.
“Take one more step and we're off. We’ll fall together,” Yuri said with a calm yet psycho tone.
“YURI STOP AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING!”
Makoto screamed with obvious fear in his voice.
Makoto had to think of something, and quickly. His mind and thoughts went through all types of twists and turns. Then, it hit him. Makoto knew what he had to do. He would do whatever it takes to save the one he loved.
“I love you Monique,” Makoto said full of passion while running full speed towards Yuri and Monique.
“What are you doing--” Monique tried to finish her statement until she felt two strong, soft, and gentle hands push her out of Yuri’s harm.
Before Monique almost tripped when she was pushed, Chief snatched her into his arms. Monique tried to break free in an attempt to get Makoto.
“Goodbye.” Makoto said with a gentle smile on his face and Yuri with a gentle yet psycho smile on his face.
Yuri pulled Makoto closer and closer towards the roof until he leaned back with Makoto in his arms and fell off the 1,450 foot building. What felt like slow motion, Monique burst out of Chief's arms and ran to the edge of the roof watching Yuri and Makoto fall. They hit the concrete floor at the bottom of the building. Blood splattered everywhere and the people at the bottom of the building trying to get in screamed. A few of the detectives from Unit 12 went to go and have everyone at the bottom evacuate the scene.
“You idiot…” Monique said while crying her heart and soul out.
All Monique felt was despair. She was filled with emptiness. All she could do was reminisce about all the times she had with Makoto.
