Love Beyond Bounds: The "Humanity" of Rats

In the late 1990s, Jaak Panksepp, the father of affective neuroscience, discovered that rats could laugh. Of course, this comes in the form of ultrasonic chirps that we can’t necessarily hear. It was only after their vocalizations were monitored in a lab that Brian Knutson, a member of Panksepp’s lab, realized there was something that appeared unexpectedly similar to human laughter. The team continued tickling the little guys and measured their response. They found that the rats bonded with the ticklers, approaching them more frequently to play with. The rats were enjoying themselves.
