Season 4 review

Maya Terry, FEBRUARY 2023

YOU Season 4 part 1 has finally come out this month, and man has this been a RIDE. I didn’t expect this type of story/plot for this season and was shocked at how the producers decided to start this season off.

First things first, I will say I wasn’t as excited for this season; the trailers and teasers I saw for it made me think the story was just gonna be the same as every other season. Joe finds some girl to be obsessed with, he stalks the girl, he kills people that the girl likes, and boom: some odd thing happens, and Joe ends up killing her and moving away again. But that didn’t really happen this season, and it was such a breath of fresh air seeing the changes they made.

(CAUTION: HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD)

One of my favorite things they changed about this season was the whodunnit atmosphere. I love a good whodunnit situation, and I’ve always found them so fun to try to figure out. When I first saw Malcolm on Joe’s table when he woke up from being drunk, I was DISTRAUGHT. The show had just started (literally the first episode), and there was already so much that Joe had to worry about with the detective still on him and with Marienne hating him (which we find out later in the episode). I couldn’t believe it, but at the same time, I wasn't surprised. I kept thinking he ruined this whole “I’m not going to murder anyone” promise he made. I also was kinda just done with the season already since I figured the same stuff was going to happen, except now it’s in a different order. But I’m glad I decided to give it another shot since right at the end of the episode, our actual murderer/stalker changed EVERYTHING.

Another change that was so interesting was having Joe be stalked by the real murderer. You would think that the guy who has been a stalker for years now wouldn’t ever get a stalker right? But no, he got one. I found the whole thing so funny, just seeing Joe try to figure out who it was out of the rich circle, but I also couldn’t help but be captivated by it. I kept creating my own predictions, but once I would have someone for sure that I figured would do it, I would believe that it was someone else. I did think they were going to make the murderer Kate only because they made her seem mean, so I figured this was more of a revenge situation. But it also didn’t make sense for her to do that in the first place. Like, I know she didn’t really like her boyfriend, but I didn’t really see why she would murder him.
This leads me to the other change they made that I liked: They didn’t make it where Kate just immediately liked Joe. She ultimately hated him. I kinda hoped they wouldn’t get together since I kinda didn’t like Kate in the beginning. I found her kinda annoying, especially when she would make comments about Joe for no reason. But I figured she was going to be the romantic interest since the stalker/murderer made him follow after her to make sure she doesn’t get hurt. It was a forced enemies-to-lovers situation, which was different for YOU, but it ultimately worked out.

Following that, another change that I found kinda funny is that throughout the season, no one in the group really liked Joe besides Phoebe. He was just an outsider that would be invited to different parties and events. Now, I won't say that Joe is always loved by characters in the seasons, but he also isn’t hated. This group seemed like they really just hated him and only kept him around for Phoebe. I thought it was so messed up how they all kinda set him up with the police, but of course, he was able to get out of that situation.
My reactions to this season could be summed up as: shocked, intrigued, disgusted, and happy. When I tell you I was so shocked for our killer to be Rhys, I literally gasped when they revealed it was him. First off, I completely forgot he could’ve been a possible candidate since he kinda was forgettable and he just seemed like an outside character. I know he was in the circle, but he barely did anything and always seemed busy running for mayor. I was extremely pulled into this season and I didn’t want it to end. I stayed up all night basically watching the show, and when it was over, I was so ready for the second part (I still am). I was pretty disgusted with how some of the characters acted like, Roald being so obsessed with Kate and Gemma being very ignorant. But I was happy with how good the season ended up being and how different it was this season. I also loved the character development Joe had and how we got to see different parts of him that aren’t normally shown. I seriously loved this season and I cannot wait to watch the next part to see what happens!!
