Part 2 of season 4 of You was released this month, and let me just say the TWIST this part had was insane to me. I was so happy that Joe had finally stopped killing people and was actually just trying to live a semi-normal life. But that was nowhere near what actually happened. I was so upset to see that this whole time, Joe really did lose his mind, and that all the things we thought he didn’t do he did do.

Of course, to start this article off, I need to talk about the whole situation with Rhys not actually being this horrible person we believed he was. Seeing Joe kill Rhys at first was expected but made me believe that he deserved it since he killed all those people. But once another Rhys had shown up, I was so confused. I lowkey believed that Rhys had a twin or something similar.
But then we figured out that Rhys was just IN HIS HEAD. Like of course, I knew there was actually a real Rhys who was in the circle and who did speak to Joe once, but they were never as close as we thought. I was actually so upset when I found this out, and it really let me know that the show was back to its same sequence again (Joe obsesses over someone, kills a whole bunch of people in order to “protect” the girl he loves, and gets away with it). |
The only issue with this season was Joe was confused about everything he did, which made it more interesting to watch him uncover it all. Additionally, the show would also switch over to the perspective of Nadia, which showed her going through all of Joe’s things in his little apartment, ultimately helping us uncover the truth faster. When she had gone through all of Joe’s things and found the key, I had a small feeling it had something to do with Marianne. And to my surprise, I was right.
Let me just say I am shocked that Joe was able to recreate the box that he’s trapped so many people in. The show helps us figure out how Marianne even got into the box by switching it to her perspective. Now at first, we see a familiar scene with Marianne at the train station about to leave to go back home after the art fest. The only difference this time is that Joe puts drugs in her drink and ends up kidnapping her. Once Marianne finally wakes back up, we see this other apartment that Joe lives in and additionally, we see that Joe has completely lost it. He is found watching Rhys’s videos basically obsessing over him, which starts to explain why evil Rhys was just a figment of Joe’s imagination. We also see that Marianne tries to bring Joe back to reality, but every time she tries, Joe forces her to drug herself to go back to sleep. Eventually, Marianne tries to break free, but that's exactly how she ends up in the box.

I will say too that in this specific episode (kinda forgot which one) where Joe tries to get Marianne out of the box after seeing her die, it really showed how gone Joe was from reality. Seeing every girl Joe had been with and murdered was a lot. That whole scene was super creepy, and I kinda loved the atmosphere the show created with that. In the end, I was happy Marianne was able to get free after playing dead and with the help of Nadia. I felt so bad for her especially since Joe was EXTREMELY scary this season.
I also felt really bad for Nadia. I think she definitely should’ve minded her own business to avoid the entire mess that Joe had going on. She was just his student, and that’s exactly the type of relationship they should’ve had. I understand that their relationship was a little bit different than normal student-teacher relationships, but still. I do think without her Marianne would’ve actually died, but I still don’t think she should’ve gotten so far with trying to kill Joe or get him arrested. I knew once she was so driven to get him in trouble, it wasn’t gonna work out for her at ALL. The fact that Joe was able to catch up with her and make her get rid of all of the evidence and even frame her for the murder of her boyfriend was crazy, and watching all of that go down was so sad too.

In the end, seeing Joe get off easily was annoying and it was all thanks to Kate. This man killed her friends and her father (granted her father was horrible), yet Kate still loved him and helped him get out of all of this. The fact that Joe could go back to New York and even go on TV had me so conflicted. Of course, Joe was going to get away and have some story to back him up, but this level of getting away just seemed so unfair. Like, you’re telling me Joe is basically a millionaire now with a completely clean slate?? I was so upset in the end. I couldn’t even be happy that he got away and be able to move on with life. I literally hated how it all worked perfectly in the end. |
Now that this season is officially over, I will just sum up my feelings in one word: CONFLICTED. On one hand, I’m upset that the show followed its same old formula with Joe and that he really didn’t experience character development. On the other hand, I kinda liked how the show had you believing that Joe changed but he didn’t at all. I will say once again this was one of my favorite seasons because of the twist and turns the show had us following. The only thing is that the ending was just so unsatisfying.
Luckily, there will be another season after this that can hopefully give a better ending that is seriously fulfilling. I don’t even know how they’re going to do another season after all they did for this one. I hope they can make the next season even better than this one, but I have doubts that the next season will be all that good. I just hope they have a big twist again, except maybe this time it ends with Joe dying or something crazy like that.
