Unequal limelight: the disparities of black actresses in america
march 2025
I remember sitting on my couch, the faint aroma of popcorn surrounding the room. I stayed up watching movie after movie until I could quote them by heart, beginning to end. Film has been a way to connect people throughout the world with creativity or social information. But there are two women that were the most prominent in my childhood: Taraji P Henson and Meryl Streep. Actresses like Henson and Streep have strongly contributed to the sharing of film innovation and many of their acts are discussed in classrooms today, but are they perceived the same? Henson is often reminded of her role in Hidden Figures and sharing the stories of black women that have been pushed under the rug for years. Streep's role in The French Lieutenant's Woman left us with an understanding of how society's ideologies have changed throughout time. Ironically, it's like when you put the two next to each other acting wise, the conversation ends with ignorance and bias. We are meant to accept the racial disparities and challenges Henson faces, even if their acting had an equal amount of emotion, blossoming film history into something beautiful.
