why i would join a cult
nina grice, may 2025

He has his kin,
And I have him.
He promised me a pretty pink pony
For all my worry.
From necklaces made of macaroni
To selling crack in the back of the allies.
He hates money
So, he took it all away from me.
He knows I am his exhibited trustee.
No need for exhibit A or B.
He said, “It's for a bigger purpose.”
Why would he ever need to lie to me?

I have a husband.
Every time I see him
I see his big brown eyes.
I get pangs of pain in my head,
And I don’t mind.
Because I love my husband
Who’s twice my age.
But, I love my husband.
He gives me special care,
When I need aid.

I will transcend
Into a new body.
If I am with my man
I don’t need any-body.

I have a husband.
Every time I see him
I feel his frail, soft hands.
I get pangs of pain in my heart,
And I don’t mind.
Because I love my husband
He’s all I ever wanted.
But, I love my husband.
He tells me our souls are bonded.

He’s a leader,
So I follow.
I don’t care about the day
Or tomorrow.
I sit in my solitude
And think about my false sorrows.
He will tame the day with his sworded arrows
I will die by his side,
Because it is him I choose to follow.

I will transcend
Into a new body.
If I am with my man
I don’t need any-body.
