was her new dream. And them failling in love proved to her that there was still love to be had outside of the confines of her tower. He showed her that she wasn’t alone, empowering her to leave mother Gothel for good and pursue her own happiness. Throughout their adventure, Rapunzel learns that there are bonds to be had with people besides her “mother,” and that Gothel wasn’t the only person in the world to love her. In addition, Rapunzel and Eugene take the time to become friends first and understand each other (a key aspect of a healthy relationship). Eugene initially comes off as self-centered and arrogant, but over time, we learn |
that the reason why he has become so guarded was because of his childhood as an orphan growing up with nothing, so he felt he had to hide who he really was to build his self-confidence (adopting the name “Flynn Rider”). However, Rapunzel is able to rebuild his sense of trust, and he finally opens up to her about his real name and backstory. In the end, he was willing to sacrifice himself so that mother Gothel would never take advantage of Rapunzel again and she could finally be free. When he thought he was going to die, the last thing he told her wasn’t “I love you” (the common thing couples would say to each other). Instead, he says, “You were my new dream.” This is so much more meaningful, because it's what they've confided in one another since they first met: dreams. They’ve both impacted each other's lives for the better, with Rapunzel finally opening up to new experiences and Eugene leaving behind his life of crime to start a new one with her.
Aladdin and Jasmine Although these characters may embody certain archetypes, they also transcend them. Aladdin is locally known as the “street rat” and a “delinquent” (in the broadest sense of the term), but it’s made immediately clear that he’s got a heart of gold. Jasmine is a rebellious princess, but she wasn’t raised to be spoiled or selfish He has the appeal of the bad boy without actually being one, |
and she has enough intelligence and wit to counterbalance her naivety. Both are unsatisfied with their lives despite coming from opposite sides of the class divide; each feels trapped in their current situation. This is one of the reasons why their dynamic works so well. They are each given their moment to be introduced separately before they meet.
This way, we know their wants and motivations from the beginning and, even before they do, just how similar they are. Their interactions are also fun to watch because they have fun together. They’re two people who genuinely enjoy hanging out and being in each other's company, highlighting the importance of having a relationship built on liking as well as loving the other person. Their relationship reminds us that love involves trust, respect, and understanding, all of which must be established and built over time. Just as Aladdin and Jasmine are about to kiss for the first time, the palace guards arrive and send them into a panic. Aladdin takes immediate action and asks Jasmine "Do you trust me?” With only a few seconds to answer, she says yes. Her affirmative response to this question acts as a declaration of their trust and shows how much they confide in one another. This comes up again when he takes her on the iconic magic carpet ride, except this time instead of rushing to leap to safety, they fly away into the freedom they crave so much.

Dimitri and Anya
When they first meet, it’s definitely not love at first sight, which is refreshing considering how many stories have the main couple immediately get along after their first encounter. Their relationship gradually progresses from enemies to lovers with just the right amount of chemistry, humor, and growing trust on both sides. In the beginning, Anya is merely a means to an end. Dimitri was looking for someone to pass as “Anastasia” for a con he was planning, and Anya happened to appear at the right time. |
He even kept his plan a secret because he didn’t want to share a third of the reward money with her. They are both stubborn, opinionated individuals with a kind side. The two may have had their fair share of arguments, but it’s easy to see the chemistry between them through their witty banter. When Anya recovers from her amnesia, she reclaims her identity as the actual Anastasia. While she is still the same person she was before the truth came out, her shifting role in Dimitri’s life--from mark to love interest--is what forces him to go through his profound change in character. Living in a post-revolutionary Russia left him in poverty and desperate to find a way out of his dismal situation. This led him to become selfish and exploit others for his own gain. There is some irony in the fact that the trump-card of his con is the music box, which he only acquired through his selflessness in saving Anastasia as a child, but the world’s payback for his future scheming is a double blow: first that he falls in love with his mark, and second that his mark truly is the girl everyone’s been looking for, which leads
Wall-E and Eve Despite his programming, it is clear that Wall-E has a vast amount of humanity. He’s an adorable little robot with so much enthusiasm and curiosity for the world around him. However, there is a profound sense of loneliness within him since he has managed to develop a personality and sentience. For this reason, he craves connection. Then he meets Eve, who he is immediately fascinated by, as she is the only real company he’s had in years. She doesn’t understand his world, but he keeps her safe on it. The two are polar opposites, with entirely different |
upbringings and purpose. Nonetheless, they grow to accept and appreciate each other's presence on the planet, and even find similarities despite their technological differences. Neither one of them has ever had the chance to truly interact with another being in a meaningful way, so they find a sense of comfort in one another as they bond. At the end of the film, when Wall-E has returned to his original robotic state and lost all memory of who he was, Eve brings him back with a zap/kiss. It is through that connection, that relationship with someone else, that saves him, as this is what he’s been yearning for his whole life. He is no longer alone, and neither is Eve.
Tarzan and Jane On a surface level, it would be difficult to believe that any sort of relationship between these two would be possible. After all, Tarzan was raised in the jungle by gorillas with no idea what proper English society would expect from a man, let alone how to speak the language, whereas Jane grew up in the civilized city of London. Her life is dictated by customs, rules and the language she knows Nonetheless, they each make an effort to get to know the other's world, taking their differences as an opportunity to expand their horizons. When they first meet, they try to understand each other through gestures and motions, eventually finding a rhythm in which they can effectively communicate. Tarzan becomes dedicated to learning about English customs in order to better understand Jane and where she comes from, while Jane shows compassion towards Tarzan’s found family and intently tries to understand their way of life. Acceptance and communication are the foundation for a long lasting relationship. These two can certainly handle any challenges life may throw at them, knowing that they can always rely on each other in the end |
Carl and Ellie From the very beginning of the film, we are shown the emotional rollercoaster that is Carl and Ellie’s loving relationship, simultaneously warming and breaking our hearts. The two meet each other at a very young age and start as childhood friends who connect through their shared love of their favorite explorer as they both desire adventure and to see the world. Common interests are great to have in any relationship. They are what allow you to bond with your loved ones and even set future goals and aspirations together. This is exactly what Carl and Ellie end up doing, each hoping to one day travel to Paradise Falls. Together, they share a lifetime of uplifting memories. |
However, there is no such thing as the perfect relationship, and there certainly never has been one without conflict. The two may experience challenges along the way, such as Ellie’s inability to have children, Carl being very accident prone, and life distracting each other from their dream until it's too late. Yet they manage to get through these times because they are so supportive of one another and dedicated to each other's happiness. After all, the whole movie is about Carl going above and beyond to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, showing just how meaningful showing devotion for your loved one can be.
