Valdrá La Pena Para Ti

Eli torres, december 2022

I’ve always hated the cold,
hated the feeling of my fingertips freezing,
never liked getting stuck in the snow,
or somehow slipping on ice,
the cold nipping at my nose and
momentarily turning me into Rudolf
definitely wasn’t a highlight.

But why do I always long for the last leaf to fall?

The last fallen leaf makes me start counting down the days,
it starts with counting down till halloween,
then waiting for the carols to start ringing.
Following carols is turkey,
the colonizer holiday everyone seems to enjoy.
I celebrate it remembering how close you almost are.

Occasionally there’s snow added to the countdown,
it honestly doesn’t add much but it’s cold.
It makes me long for your warmth.

December 1st rolls around and I’m ecstatic.
Now the actual countdown rolls around,
15-17 days is the usual wait.
The usual wait until we’re together again.

I countdown until I say I’m done with school,
I wait for the day until I can already imagine my journey to you,
waiting and waiting doesn’t get easier over the years,
but I’ll gladly spend 3 days in a car to see you.
Everyone asks me if I’m excited to see you,
I tell them it’s as if I won a championship.

The thought of being with you is making me long for the first snow to fall.
The storybook Christmas warmth is what I need.
I can’t wait to recall all the memories we’ve made,
and to create new ones,
which will be remembered for centuries.

Although I hate the cold,
Valdrá la pena para ti.
