On August 18th, Hozier released an album named Unreal Unearth, with 16 songs based on Dante’s Inferno. After the release of the “Eat Your Young” EP back in March, this album had high expectations as more teasers and songs were released. In addition to the songs from the “Eat Your Young” EP, minus “Through Me (The Flood)”, three songs from this album were released prior to the official release date: “Francesca," “Unknown/ Nth," and “De Selby (Part 2)." Considering there are 16 songs on this album, I’ll try to keep my reviews short and sweet, and include my favorite lyrics. (I will also be excluding “Eat Your Young” and “All Things End” because I already reviewed those.)
Song #1 (My Favorite): “De Selby (Part 1)” 9.9999999/10
This song made me immediately fall in love with this album. It is exactly what I felt was lacking in the “Eat Your Young” EP. It’s slow, sweet, and ties into Hozier’s Irish roots. The outro of the song is in Gaelic (Irish) and is such a beautiful display of artistry, an amazing way to start off an album. I’m glad I got the honor of hearing this beauty in person.
Your reflection can't offer a word
To the bliss of not knowin' yourself
With all mirrorin' gone from the world

Song #2: “De Selby (Part 2)”: 8/10 Despite sharing a name, De Selby 2 is completely different from De Selby 1. It is upbeat and makes you feel like you’re floating, then brought back to consciousness. I wasn’t too keen on this song when it was first released, but that was because I was looking forward to a song like De Selby 1. Now I really like the song; it’s a banger. And I want to be so far from sight and mind I wanna kill the lights |
Song #3: “First Time” 6.99999/10
I like this song, but it’s not my favorite. It’s not very memorable among the other songs on the album. But it’s sweet and slightly upbeat, and overall a nice listen.
Some part of me must have died
The first time that you called me, "Baby"
Song #4: “Francesca” 9/10
This one gives the vibes of something you’d hear at an indie music festival from a garage band in all the right ways. It makes you want to scream the lyrics when it's loud and cry when the lyrics are soft. It takes turns being soft and belting, creating a wide range of emotions that ends with you feeling like you’re floating.
Do you think I'd give up?
That this might've shook the love from me
Or that I was on the brink?
How could you think, darlin', I'd scare so easily?
Song #5: “I, Carrion (Icarian)” 7/10
Like “First Time”, this one is also a little forgettable. It's a sweet, soft, romantic song, reminiscent of the story of Icarus. It’s a good song, but it doesn’t leave much of an impression.
And though I burn, how could I fall
When I am lifted by every word you say to me?
Song #6: “Eat Your Young” 8.5/10
Song #7: Damage Gets Done 6/10 This rating might be biased, but I’m not the biggest fan of Hozier’s collaborations (other than “Nina Cried Power”). Like the other songs rated lower, it’s not a bad song. I actually think it would be good for a road trip or something. Unfortunately, I get carsick sooo… I heard once, it's the comforts that make us feel numb We'd go out with no way to get home |
Song #8: “Who We Are” 8/10
This song is very emotionally driven. It has properties of both his softer and more upbeat songs. It makes you want to sing your heart out and let everything go. Also a great experience to hear in person.
I just held it tight
So someone with your eyes
Might come in time
To hold me like water
Or Christ, hold me like a knife
Song #9: “Song of Nyx” 9/10
This song is just an instrumental. It’s beautifully arranged and feels like a storybook even though it has no words. I’d go to sleep to this, and I’d dream about being in a mystical castle.
Song #10: “All Things End” 7.5/10
Song #11: “To Someone from a Warm Climate (Uiscefhuaraithe)” 9.8/10
This is such a passionate song. In concert, Hozier said this song derived from a new word he learned in Gaelic: Uiscefhuaraithe, the feel of coldness only water brings. It’s so beautiful and sweet, and a delight to hear in person.
You’d press your body to the concrete when you were small
The rains of winter seemed to never leave the walls
Song #12: “Butchered Tongue” 9/10
This is another passionate song speaking on Irish culture and the history of Ireland, including the Wexford Rebellion. It’s a song that comes from the heart, and it is beautifully orchestrated. It’s a favorite for many and very memorable.
Until the distance has been shown between what is lost forever
And what can still be known
So far from home to have a stranger call you, ‘Darling’
Song #13: “Anything But” 8/10
This song strays away from the somber tone of the past songs and is very upbeat. It makes you want to get up and dance with somebody.
I wanna be soft as a single stone in a rainstick
I wanna be the thunder of a hundred thousand hooves moving quick
Song #14: “Abstract (Psychopomp)” 8.7/10
This song is so beautiful. Another song that makes you want to sing your heart out.
I remember the view, streetlights in the dark blue
The moment I knew I'd no choice but to love you
Song #15: “Unknown/ Nth” 9.7/10
When this song was released, I turned it off because it hit me too hard. I felt like I was being called out. But it’s a beautiful, romantic, heartbreaking song. Absolutely magical in person.
Where a blindin' light shone on you еvery night
And either side of my sleep
Where you were held frozen like an angel to me
Song #16: “First Light” 9.6/10
Absolutely beautiful. That's it.
The sky set to burst
The gold and the rust
The colour erupts
You filling my cup
The sun coming up
