Ultrakill: the game where you play as a blood fuel war robot descending into the layers of hell, killing everything in sight.
Sounds insane, right? At first, that’s what it seems: that you’re just there to kill everything in sight to stay alive. But as the game goes on, you learn that the majority of humanity was killed in a war--not just any war, but what’s known as the ‘Hundred-Year War.’ And another little thing you find out as you progress is that HELL IS ALIVE. Yes, a living being.
It becomes very apparent that this game is way, WAY deeper than what meets the eye. This game completely changes this genre of games. Ultrakill is almost the polar opposite of Doom (besides the killing demons part). The graphics are polygonal, and most sprites are low-resolution, but that becomes completely ignored once the gameplay is experienced. The game introduces an insanely smooth combat system that is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

The game came out way back in 2020, but I didn’t pick it up till almost a year ago. I have always seen highlights of the game and what one would consider a fake fan. At first, I was drawn into the combat system, as I’m sure most people were when it first came out. But I was soon drawn to the entire plot of this game; it completely flips everything about the reality we live in. I mean, a hundred-year war that ended humanity because of war machines? The more I found out about the lore, the more obsessed with the game I became.
Now, I’m not gonna tell the entire plot because you have to experience it for yourself; it’s like me trying to explain how a famous chef’s dish tasted-it has to be experienced first-hand. This game is still in development, and recently, updated with a new set of levels. The thing about this game is that each set of levels becomes more and more complicated and just insane. It both adds to the combat experience and the story, so it almost becomes unreal. I hate how I can’t tell you all how this game is because I don’t want to spoil it, ugh.
