The dogs in the shelter, yelp at freedom
The cats, put in their cages for being too feral
The animals in the zoo, retrace their steps in the wild
The marine life, try to remember when their home wasn’t a plastic water bottle
The polar bears and penguins, watching the ice melt in their hands, trying desperately to hold on to it.
The insects, scrambling from the death that is pesticides.
The deer, waiting to cross the road they once knew as home.
The birds, looking for a branch without spikes
The trees in the city rotting from the inside, reaching out to see the sunrise one last time.
Human-Infested lands
Human-Infested water
Those who forget the heart once attached to the slab of pork on their plate
And who am I to say I don’t hold the gun, or carry the hands that mount the skulls on the wall?
In another world, we died
You returned to Mother Nature
And she stretched out her warmth, and covered you in her moss
While we rotted and disappeared to ash, all critters and crawlers and swimmers and climbers had not a care in the world
In another world, we saved you.
God’s creations, beautiful and wild, killed by God’s deceivers
God, I’m sorry
My air, my darlings,
I’m sorry.
