CHRISTMAS MOVIES
IMO
1. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
The Muppet Christmas Carol is hands-down one of the funniest and most enjoyable Christmas movies of all time. Putting a classic Jim Henson spin on Charles Dickens’s thought provoking tale “A Christmas Carol”, Brian Henson brings the Muppet Christmas spirit to life, casting story characters Bob Cratchit, Fezziwig, and Jacob Marley as puppets. In the movie, the story is even narrated by Charles Dickens himself, although in the form of the strange blue bird Gonzo. Ebenezer Scrooge is played by Michael Caine, an English actor who has starred in over 160 different films throughout his career. Caine manages to bring some weight to an otherwise very lighthearted film, which is why this movie earns its spot at number 1.
2. A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
Ok, so maybe this pick is a bit more for nostalgia than its merit as a film, but the Charlie Brown Christmas movie is an absolute classic that I never fail to rewatch year after year. The characters are well written, the story progresses naturally (and relatably), and the funny moments always hit regardless of age. The story culminates in a speech from Linus, a commentary on the meaning of Christmas and how not everything about the holidays has to be commercialized or material to be genuine. And all in just half an hour!
3. Home Alone (1990)
An absolute classic of the holiday film scene, Home Alone turns the idea of a neat-and-tidy Hallmark Christmas movie on its head with its memorable fast-paced action and slapstick comedy. But look past the morally questionable, unnecessarily violent actions of Kevin McCallister and you will find some real story and character development throughout the film as Kevin learns to be more independent, facing and overcoming his fears as he braves the absence of his family.
4. It’s A Wonderful Life (1947)
An oldie but a goodie, It’s A Wonderful Life tells the story of George Bailey, saved by Gabriel, his guardian angel, as he is about to take his own life. Throughout the movie, Gabriel walks George down memory lane, laying out the effects of all the good deeds and sacrifices that George has made throughout his life. While the messaging in this movie is somewhat controversial, I believe there is a lot of merit in the idea that not every action has to be selfish to be beneficial. Overall, a pretty good movie. Definitely worth a spot on this list.
5. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Either one, 1966 or 2000)
This movie basically goes without saying. The Grinch is a classic tale of development and redemption in what appears to be an inarguably evil character. The message of the movie itself is also a good one: the holidays aren’t just about presents or traditions; they’re about being together and celebrating in your own way. (Also, Jim Carrey as the Grinch may be the best casting choice of all time). 10/10 movie!
