Top 5 black owned restaurants
Deanna baksin, February 2021

In the light of Black History Month, February is the perfect time to give back to our community and support small black-owned businesses. Here are my Top 5 Black-Owned Restaurants to visit in Chicago during Black History Month.

$-$$$: Price range from less expensive to more expensive
Batter and Berries
2748 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60614

$$
Covid Restrictions: Masks required, Dine-in, Delivery, Curbside Pickup Available

My family and I have been visiting this place on Chicago’s Northside for years, so I thought it would be only appropriate to give a shout-out to one of my favorite cafes in the city. Batter and Berries has a variety of breakfast, brunch, and lunch options from french toast and omelets to wraps, salads, and sandwiches. From my previous visit, I would recommend the Strawberry French Toast. For more info, check them out here!

Shawn Michelle’s Homemade Ice Cream
46 E 47th St, Chicago, IL 60653

$$
Covid Restrictions: Masks required, temperature checked upon entry, safety dividers, Delivery, Curbside Pickup Available

Another restaurant that I’ve visited in the past: Shawn Michelle’s Ice Cream parlor in Bronzeville. I came across this place in the summer of 2019, and the ice cream is phenomenal, with a great homemade taste, and they even have vegan options. If you plan on trying their ice cream, I’d recommend the cookies and cream and vanilla supreme. For more info, you can check them out here!

Ain’t She Sweet Cafe
526 E 43rd St, Chicago, IL 60653

$$
Covid Restrictions: Masks required, Delivery, Curbside Pickup Available

A new favorite of mine--and another gem in Bronzeville, as well as Beverly--is Ain’t She Sweet Cafe. This cafe has various amounts of wraps, sandwiches, soups of the day, smoothies, shakes, and desserts. Since the menu is pretty big, for first-timers I’d recommend their build your own wrap/sandwich option and a small sweet like a brownie or slice of pound cake. For more info, check them out here!

Can’t Believe it’s Not Meat!
1368 E 53rd St, Chicago, IL 60615

$$$
Covid Restrictions: Masks required, Delivery, Curbside Pickup Available

As a former vegetarian myself, I really appreciate the rise in non meat options around the city, especially close to home. Can’t Believe It’s Not Meat has an ample amount of choices from salads to hoagies to burgers to sandwiches, and the list goes on. Similar to Ain’t She Sweet, the menu is pretty diverse, so for starters I’d recommend a burger or a salad. For more info, check them out here!

Sip and Savor
5301 S Hyde Park Blvd, Chicago, IL 60615

$
Covid Restrictions: Masks required, Delivery, Curbside Pickup Available

For the last restaurant, we have a cafe located in Hyde Park and Bronzeville, two of the locations being right by Ain’t She Sweet and Shawn Michelle’s: Sip and Savor. Not only does Sip and Savor have hot coffee and lattes, but they also offer frappuccinos, teas, smoothies, decaf options, and “lite bites.” For my coffee drinkers, I’d recommend a regular iced coffee, and if you’re not really into coffee, much like myself, I’d recommend chai tea latte or the mango passion tea. For more info, check them out here!
