I watch a lot of shows in my free time. It's easy to like most of the characters, but of course, there are those that I just cannot handle. Characters that just make my blood boil. The writers of these shows have a way of creating characters that aren't only people that you genuinely dislike, but people so terrible that you start to question if you even like the show anymore. These are the characters that I dislike the most, ranked from mild to extreme dislike.
warning spoilers ahead
honorable mention - Matt Donovan
Starred in: The Vampire Diaries I Rating: TV-14
Matt Donovan was a terrible character from literally the first episode of the show. I don’t know how he managed to increase his level of irritation for 8 seasons, but he did. Matt was one of the remaining human main characters in the show. He always found a way to ruin something. Every time Damon and Stefan were in trouble, he just had to be a traitor. He was also a hypocrite. He called himself hating vampires and wanting to rid Mystic Falls of them but constantly helped them every time they needed to get out of a sticky situation. Then he complained so much about how much he hated them, which made him even more unlikeable.
Most annoying seasons: 6-8
10th - Serena van der woodsen
Starred in: Gossip Girl I Rating: TV-14
In 10th place, we have Serena Van Der Woodsen from Gossip Girl. Serena did have her sweet moments, but she is mostly portrayed as a terrible friend. She not only slept with her best friend’s boyfriend, but she also stole her dream of attending Yale University. Serena tends to disregard everyone’s feelings for her own selfish gains. She is overly entitled and continuously uses the excuse that she's “finding herself” and “getting herself together” to do anything she wants.
Most irritating seasons: 1, 3, 5, and 6
9th - Hope Mikaelson
Starred in: The Originals & Legacies I Rating: TV-14
Hope Mikaelson is the daughter of Klaus Mikaelson and Hailey Marshall. From the first season, even as a little baby, she was the root of most problems, the biggest one being the formation of rivalries between the vampires and witches of New Orleans. Seeing as she can’t really be blamed for her birth and the issues that came with it, however, it wasn’t until the last season that she could really be considered a horrible character.
Earlier on in the show, in order to prevent mass destruction, each one of her family members took in a part of something called the hollow and separated, swearing to never reunite because of the power the hollow holds when it's in full. Eventually, they are forced back together, as a result of Hope’s horrible decisions, and at the end of the show… *tears* Klaus and Elijah die.
(Okay, so I know it's mostly not Hope's fault and she couldn't control what happened but… I just can't get over it because of my love for Elijah and Klaus. I just cannot stand her, and I refuse to watch Legacies because of it.)
Most annoying seasons: 4 and 5
8th - tamia "coop" COOper
Stars in: All American | Rating: TV-14
Coop is one of those hard headed characters who do the exact opposite of what they’re told, getting herself into so much trouble. In season one, she started hanging with a group of boys who were all in a gang. The main character, Spencer, warned her to not involve herself with them multiple times. But of course, she didn't listen. And to make matters worse, she has absolutely no street smarts. She constantly puts herself in dangerous situations and needs Spencer to save her. Coop ended up almost being arrested for murder, which could’ve been avoided if she had just listened to Spencer and minded her business, but she wanted to fit in so bad. She was hands down the scariest character. If she couldn't take the heat, she should've stayed out of the kitchen! She was also a terrible girlfriend who lied about the simplest things multiple times.
Most irritating seasons: 1 and 2
7th - rachel berry
Starred in: Glee | Rating: TV-14
Rachel is just overall a self-centered, attention seeking, and selfish person. She never realizes that other people have problems too and is only concerned with herself. She needs validation all the time and lives for applause, always needing to be told that she's great. She also thinks singing will make everything better, and I know it's a musical show, but girl, stop singing and solve your problems like the grown adult you are!
Let's not even get started on her terrible love life... it's a whole mess. She literally took every opportunity for granted. Rachel was also a very jealous character, and whenever she didn't get something, she would try to sabotage others’ chances. She thinks she's such a good person, but we all know she's not.
Most irritating seasons: The whole series
6th - Zoey johnson
Stars in: Grown-ish | Rating: TV-14
Zoey is very irritating. I don’t know how, but in every single episode of every single season, she was irritating. She’s such a terrible friend that it’s crazy. Not only is she self-centered, but she tends to make bad decisions very often. Zoey also never takes into consideration how anybody else feels. It always has to be about her, what she wants, and how she feels. She never sees the need to take a moment and realize that her friends have feelings too.
She is also over-dramatic, like when she was really pressed that her friends called her boyfriend a genius and not her. It really wasn't that deep, and she was only mad that the attention wasn't on her. She lets relationships and partying get in the way of her academic success at school.
For example, she was supposed to be studying for her chemistry final, but instead, she was out partying, so she never got to study, ended up cheating, and then proceeded to get caught cheating and almost got EXPELLED. Make it make sense.

5th - dan humphrey
Starred in: Gossip Girl | Rating: TV-14
Dan was a pretty decent character right up until season six of Gossip Girl. Actually, I lied. He was a terrible character throughout the show, but especially in season 6. Dan was in a long-term relationship with Serena van der Woodsen and eventually began to write a book about Serena and her friends, people that were supposed to be his friends too, that exposed everybody's business.
At the end of season 6, Dan reveals to Serena that he is a Gossip Girl. This was a big shocker. He was friends with the Upper East Siders for years. They welcomed him into their homes, some of the characters even seeing him as family, and the whole time, he was spilling all of their secrets and exposing them through Gossip Girl. He is the worst friend ever, yet somehow he ended up marrying Serena??? After all he did!!! The characters were wayyy better than me because they really forgave him.. Yea no.
Most irritating seasons: 3, 5, and 6
4th - Alison dilaurentis
Starred in: Pretty Little Liars | Rating: TV-14
Alison was one of those mean girls. She was a bully and the “Queen Bee” of her school. She bullied one of the characters, Mona, for years and even continuously made sly comments about her friend Hannah’s weight. Pretty Little Liars starts with Alison going missing, and later her friends and family find out that she “died,” but she actually faked her death. Alison’s friends went through so many traumatic experiences because of her.
Alison had so many enemies from doing horrible things, like when she blinded a character named Jenna and made Jenna's brother, Toby, take the blame for it. She also manipulated and gaslighted Emily (her friend and love interest). She played with Emily's feelings before and after she went missing. When Alison returned to her hometown, she forced her friends into another lie, making them go along with the story that she was kidnapped.
Not only was Alison a terrible friend, manipulative, and inconsiderate, she also had no respect for anybody but herself. Her story line was confusing and stupid, and she continuously tried to justify all the terrible things she did.

3rd - Elena Gilbert
Starred in: Vampire Diaries | Rating: TV-14
Elena was just annoying. She didn't do anything as drastic as the other people on this list, but watching seasons 1-6 is a pain because of how annoying she is. Firstly, she was a terrible friend. Even though I love Elena and Damon as a couple, Damon used her friend, Caroline, as a blood source and compelled her multiple times, but Elena still dated the man. Also, her other best friend, Bonnie, was literally dead for almost a whole summer, and she didn't notice?? It seemed like she only used Bonnie for her powers when she needed to be saved. Ummm, selfish much?
On top of being a terrible friend, she's a terrible sister. Elena was so controlling of Jeremy, but also never even took the time to pay attention to him. He died and came back to life, but she was too busy caught up in herself to even ask him how he felt and be there for him. Also, everything in the show was to save Elena and make sure Elena was okay. It got really irritating at times. Elena killed an original vampire (one of the first ever vampires) knowing anybody who was tied to that original bloodline would die, too. Thousands of people!! Just so she could get the cure to become human again. How selfish?? On top of that, her voice and facial expressions were just irritating.
Most irritating seasons: 2-6
2nd - leila zimmer
Stars in: Grand Army | Rating: TV-MA
Leila was one of those characters that almost everybody hated. She tried so hard to fit in, it gave me secondhand embarrassment. During the show, Leila auditioned for the school play and got the role, but she was so distracted by what everyone else thought and what everybody else was doing that she wasn't successful in playing her role. Leila had the potential to be an actress, but she took everything besides her acting role seriously. Like, where's your sense of humor? She was very selfish, clueless, and really mean at times. During the show she dug herself into a deeper hole each episode, ultimately making everyone dislike her. At the beginning of each episode, there was a quote being typed on a screen and in the last episode, we find out it's actually an email Leila is writing that says somebody is gonna bomb the school. Because of the threat, the school is evacuated and the play is cancelled, which gives her time to be with her love interest, who is also helping with the play. Leila ruined all his hard work and for what? What was the purpose of writing the email?
Most irritating episodes: 1-9
1st - nate jacobs
Stars in: Euphoria | Rating: TV-MA
Nate is one of the main antagonists of Euphoria, and he's like the poster-boy for being a rude, athletic, teenager. He's always angry, no matter the situation. As many times as I've watched the show, I can’t recall ever seeing him not mad. He also gets arrested for domestic violence after marks are found on his girlfriend Maddy’s neck. This is not the only time we've seen Nate hurt somebody. In the beginning of the season, he beats up a boy named Tyler for messing with Maddy. He then forces Tyler to confess to assaulting Maddy, even though he never did.
Nate shows signs of toxic masculinity throughout the whole show. He also feels as if he can define femininity, and has strong opinions of what a woman should look like, what she should do/say, and how she should carry herself. This makes me dislike him even more. Nate definitely gave misogynist throughout the whole show. He catfishes one of the main characters, Juels, and blackmails her into doing anything he wants.
He then threatens to report her to the police for sending him nude pictures because he thought she was trying to ruin his life, when in reality all she wanted to do was mind her business. The worst part is that he feels bad about nothing he does, and shows no remorse to anybody he's hurt. So it’s safe to say that Nate might be the worst character ever.
