What is it like to be a black woman in America?
Well, you never get to be a child.
Everything is grown.
The color red
Long Hair
Unbumped ends.
Nobody realizes how they slow a little girl's development by calling her “fast”.
Then as little black girls, we must fight.
We have to fight every stereotype against us.
We gotta fight our mother’s jealousy.
We gotta fight teen pregnancy.
We gotta fight the loud allegations.
Then we have to fight to get into college.
There is nothing society hates more than an educated black woman.
We find spaces, then we dominate them.
But then comes the criticism.
Now we’re mean girls
Now we’re money-hungry
Now we’re bullies
Now that’s bullshit.
Well, hate has no rhyme or reason.
There is no winning as a black woman.
We fall in love with a man, try to start a family.
But even if a man leaves we become the scapegoat.
Baby Mama
Single mother.
We get blamed for staying
But blamed for not choosing better.
You hate our hair
But emulate it.
You hate our slang
Yet misuse it.
You hate our style
But steal it.
You hate our features
Yet pay for them.
But most of all you hate our skin.
Lightskin
Brownskin
Darkskin
Albino
Our beautiful glistening skin.
What is it?
What did black women do to become
All the shades you hate.
Well, you never get to be a child.
Everything is grown.
