Get ready with your Halloween candy and anything else you need to sit through the gameplay of The Quarry. If you haven’t heard of this game, you’re missing out.
The Quarry is from the creators of Until Dawn, another choice-based horror game. The Quarry centers around a group of camp counselors trying to survive the night against werewolves in the woods. In the game, you play as each of these counselors. Since it’s a choice-based game, actions and dialogue are given to you so you either choose choices A or B. Sometimes even A, B, C, or D.
Back to the story: it’s like a classic horror movie. Camp counselors are stuck in the woods and try to battle supernatural creatures. But your goal isn’t to make all of them survive (unless that’s what you wish for). It goes deeper than that. You can kill off characters or even make them become infected, meaning they’ll turn into a werewolf. Note that if a character becomes a werewolf, you wouldn’t be able to play that character anymore. It just adds more danger to the game, which makes it all the more fun.

More reason I love the game: all the actions you do in the game amount to something. Something you did in Chapter 7 can affect another character in the last chapter of the game. There's a huge amount of possibilities you can have for the characters and different ways to create their path. The little actions matter, and that attention to detail is what I love for this game.

Another great thing about the game is the different modes it has. One is “couch co-op,” where you and whoever is with you on the couch pick characters to play in the game. You have to pick the right people for your couch to make the experience fun. I learned that the hard way when I wanted to save everyone, but my brother killed off someone. Such a sad experience, but fun. Another mode is “movie mode.” This is where you pick how you want the characters to act with your actions or dialogue. Even if I haven’t seen the entire movie mode (the game lasts 10 hours), it’s a new feature to add, and something I definitely haven’t seen before.

Now, there are some faults of the game. While it does pay attention to the actions you choose in the game, it doesn’t do the same for the dialogue. For example, during a scene you play as a character, you can choose to be an absolute jerk to the other characters in the moment. But then later, the game programs a standard dialogue to make it seem as if the character wasn’t a jerk. I wish the dialogue played as important a role as the actions do. I feel as if that would make the game even stronger. Since the dialogue scenes are the same no matter what you choose to say as a character, it typically makes the scenes more repetitive, which makes for a boring gameplay after you played the game once.
Overall, I enjoyed the game so much, figuring out new endings for the characters and seeing what little details I could catch. It makes for the perfect Halloween game if you decide to stay home and play around with video games.
