Black Phone 2 is the sequel to a widely loved thriller/horror movie, Black Phone. Black Phone is a widely loved movie due to its incredible acting skills from young actors, its effective blend of psychological horror and suspense elements, and a suspenseful storyline that kept viewers engaged.
When it comes to Black Phone 2, the acting is just as good, and it expands on the main characters of the previous movie. It delves deeper into the relationship between the siblings in the last film, while incorporating effective supernatural horror elements that differ from the first film.

The movie has an emotional depth that was present in the previous film. With both of the main characters, we explicitly see they’ve been struggling with the aftermath of the first movie. It’s a look into how characters in thriller/horror movies are deeply affected by the events they face that viewers don’t usually see.
However, the movie is looked down upon by many viewers for a multitude of reasons. The main reason is that the film introduces too many plot points at once, which makes the movie seem unfocused and overcrowded.

Also, the plot of the movie has vastly shifted from the previous film. While the last film is more of a thriller, the second film has the vibe of a campy slasher film with supernatural elements. This shift in genre and vibes makes the movie slightly corny and less psychological than previously.
The campy aspect of the film is both praised and looked down upon. While some viewers see it as an exciting aspect of the film that helps to make up for its weaker parts, others see it as poor writing and pacing, therefore making it a poorly done sequel.

In my eyes, Black Phone 2 was unnecessary and inadequately done in comparison to the first film. It introduced supernatural elements that weren’t present in the prior film, and provided a killer’s backstory that nobody asked for, which the film could’ve gone without. However, I liked seeing the sibling relationship and how the aftermath of the first film affected them. While Black Phone 2 definitely was needed, it was a somewhat nice addition to the horror/thriller movie genre.
