I normally don’t watch a lot of cartoon-ish shows, but when I do, they’re usually trash. But luckily, The Amazing Digital Circus wasn’t bad at all. I’ve watched this show, just like many of my other favorite shows, multiple times, and you know something is good when you can watch it over and over again.
So, the question stands: Is The Amazing Digital Circus actually so amazing, or do I just pick bad shows to watch in general? To properly answer the question, there needs to be a rundown of the plot. To better and further understand the plot of the show, it’s best to break it down by episode, starting with the first.
The first episode starts with the introduction of the original cast members of the circus, Gangle, Zooble, Kinger, Ragatha, Jax, and Kaufmo (who wasn’t present for the intro, but that’s a later topic). Pomni kind of just spawns in, which ruins the intro. Caine, the ringmaster, greets Pomni and gives her the name Pomni, since “nobody remembers their names when they enter the digital circus.” Caine then hosts an adventure for Pomni, which she doesn’t do because she goes with Ragatha and Jax to check up on/meet Kaufmo, who ends up being abstracted. Because Kaufmo abstracts, Pomni now has to find Caine, guiding Pomni to a fake exit door that leads to The Void. Caine sees this and quickly gets Pomni out of the void and transports her back to the Circus. He then fixes Ragatha, who got smacked by Kaufmo, and sends Kaufmo to the cellar with the other abstracted characters.
In the second episode, Caine creates another adventure. This one is where the characters are saving a candy kingdom from losing its most prized possession: Maple Syrup. Caine also mentions a new AI is being tested (I think he thinks Zooble will enjoy the AI). So, they get teleported there, everything is going great, Jax, being Jax, is being an a-hole like always to Gangle and the others. He also tells Pomni to build a bridge so he can climb across to the bandits’ van. Mind you, the “bridge” was Pomni’s arms and legs. But this plan fails as Pomni slips and ends up in the bandits’ van. Jax tells Gangle to slam into it, which she does, being “submissive” as Jax would say. This causes both vans to collide and Pomni and one of the bandits, Gumigoo, to be trapped under the map. Gumigoo realizes he’s not real and is just an NPC. How sad. Luckily, Pomni realizes that they could make objects collide and possibly shoot them back into the main map, which actually ends up working. In the end, because there were two syrup-filled trucks, the bandits took one, and Pomni and the others took the other. The princess of this candy land thanks them, and also asks if they’re going to execute Gumigoo, whom Pomni said could go with them back to the circus. Caine sees Gumigoo and instantly deletes him.

Episode three starts with the characters discussing what happens when they hold their breath. Jax explains to Pomni what happens to everyone, but doesn’t say what happens to him. He then goes and breaks the fourth wall, asking the viewers what they think happens. Caine then makes another adventure, because that’s all he does. This adventure is a mansion murder (WOW). Caine also mentions it’s made specifically for Zooble. They teleport to the adventure, which has two different levels: a safe one and a “made for mature Zoobles only” level. Kinger and Pomni end up doing the Zooble maturity level, while Gangle, Jax, and Ragatha do the safe one. Zooble is, of course, nowhere to be seen because they don’t like Caine or his adventures. There’s not much to this episode other than that they (Kinger and Pomni) escape the mansion, and we also find out that Zooble doesn’t like their character.
In episode four, Caine has a fast food restaurant adventure and makes Gangle the shift manager. Automatically, all hell breaks loose. Jax tosses Ragatha and puts her in the deep fryer. Gangle calls Caine, asking for punishment for “rotten employees,” in other words, Jax. Everything actually goes well for a moment until Pomni sees Gumgioo. She tries to see if he remembers her, but he doesn’t. Jax gets sent to some punishment/training room, Ragatha gets Stupid Sauce in her eye and starts acting stupid, and Gangle almost crashes out and abstracts.
In the fifth episode, Caine finally uses the suggestion box because he realizes everyone thinks of his adventures. Ragatha suggests leaving adventures open so they can do what they want when they want. This idea immediately gets shut down. Caine pulls from the suggestion box, and they do different adventures, from being Australian extremists to being in a bar. At the end, they play Softball against their evil counterparts and win. (Again, not much to the episode other than doing the most random things and realizing they don’t necessarily like each other’s ideas).
In episode six, Caine doesn’t call this much of an adventure, but it’s an adventure. It’s more so trust activities where they get a gun and go into a room where they empty the gun. They then have to shoot it at their partner, or shoot it at themselves, trusting the other person again, emptied the gun. Of course, this doesn’t go right because Jax immediately shoots Ragatha. Caine then just gives everyone guns, and then they all get to shoot each other. Jax and Pomni team up, although Pomni originally wanted to team up with Ragatha. Jax tells Pomni how she needs to let go of the real world and embrace that she’s now a digital character, which it seems she does. After they win the adventure, they get into a huge argument, which now separates the fandom into thinking Jax sucks.
In the seventh, and so far the last episode until eight and nine come out, Caine says there's no adventure. They end up doing a beach party, like Bubble, Caine’s assistant, has been suggesting for the longest time. We get the fish, who have lost their entire life savings, and tell lies. They then come back from the beach party, Jax almost abstracts, for reasons still unknown (thanks, Gooseworx). There's a wooden figurine. His name’s Abel, and he wants to help the others escape. So they follow his plan to get keys and whatnot. Jax snipes at the idea of this being one of Caine's adventures. Also, Abel doesn’t like Kinger, apparently, although they were coworkers. C&A is an evil company, and Caine is an AI confirmed. They go to Caine’s office and find the buttons to terminate the program. But Jax, who is mind-controlled by Caine, presses the button to keep the program going. Caine appears and congratulates them on beating the adventure (like Jax said would happen), and everything’sback to normal.
Now, with that being said, as someone who has watched the show three times in the past month, there are a LOT of things to understand, like why everyone loves Kinger (it’s okay because I do too), and why everyone hates Jax. But, I have to say, Jax is in fact my favorite character. I also think all of the characters are well written and have their own quirky actions and appearances, like Kinger, who has random lines like “I’m right behind you, aren’t I?” And also saying blue is his favorite color because it’s close to black. Caine also has very random lines to say to the characters when they come back from his adventures, for example, “Welcome back, my meowing milkmaids.” Like, who actually says that? There are also tons of references to other shows, like Caine doing the one meme of Peter Griffin after falling down the stairs. Bubble is also an honorable mention for a favorite character for his out-of-pocket lines, like “you should die- you should throw a f-ing beach party.”

Episode-wise, I would say Episodes 5-7 are my personal favorites because it lets you see how the characters actually interact with each other when it comes to their own ideas. Episode seven, I think, should be separate from what I’ve said about episodes 5 and 6. Episode 7 is so random, especially the fish scene. I would say that scene alone is my favorite part of the show. I would also say that there are tons of foreshadowing, for example, the Kinger saying that he would choose the blue wire. Also, Abel says to “make the right choice” when talking to the main cast about what button to press in Caine’s office. There’s also a ton of the number 57 within the show as well, yet we still don’t know exactly what 57 has to do with anything. But, there are also so many great things that come with all of the other episodes, Jax breaking the fourth wall, getting to see characters interact with their surroundings, and also niche references to other shows.
Personally, I suggest watching The Amazing Digital Circus if you like out-of-pocket but with an actual plot type of show. I really enjoyed it as someone who watches anime and K-Dramas often. The show has an older vibe to it, which is good considering it came out in 2023. If I had to put this show on an actual TV channel, it’d probably be on Fox or Adult Swim, which hosts shows like Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers. And to finally answer the question: yes, The Amazing Digital Circus is actually amazing, and no, I didn’t pick a trash show to watch.
