If you are even a little bit in tune with the current political state of the United States right now, you would see that we are headed towards a state of fascism/authoritarianism. Our current president is blatantly racist, homophobic, sexist, and about any other discriminatory practice you can think of. Many things he has done are so clearly to test how much he can do without anyone doing anything, until we are in a pot of molten hot lava and can’t do anything about it.
All the while, my generation is acting like our future is a joke. Between the copious amounts of artificial intelligence we use for every homework assignment, the constant jokes of what happened on Epstein Island, and the playful protesting signs against ICE, this generation is the most unserious ever, and not in a cute or quirky way. This generation preached about having empathy in 2020, and we are now the least empathetic people I’ve ever had the displeasure of having a conversation with. We will never free ourselves from the shackles of the far-right country we are in if we don’t learn how to take stuff seriously.

AI on devices has been a thing since the 2000s, but it was mainly algorithmic AI that didn’t use much of our Earth's resources to power. Recently, a surge of people are using generative AI, which multiple studies have shown uses gallons of fresh drinking water to power itself. Almost every big corporation has an AI feature that it essentially forces on you. The first major generative AI was ChatGPT, and then, with money made from OpenAI, other big corporations started implementing their own AI features. Trying to search up something on Google now gives you an AI overview you did not ask for that is incorrect half of the time. Google used to have a little overview of an article with a link attached to it, which was actually helpful, and helped you link your research. The AI feature genuinely did not need to be added, and it is harmful to the brains of the youth. Teens on TikTok have literally started complaining about having to write a five-sentence paragraph without the help of AI. Five sentences.
And now that they’ve literally dumbed themselves down to need AI for everything, they’re joking about the harm it does to the Earth. Studies have shown that generative AI produced more carbon emissions than New York last year, which is absolutely insane. Everyone is talking about how nice it feels in February right now, but it should never be 50 degrees in February at any given time. AI is doing nothing but harming the planet we literally live on, and everyone is oblivious to it or continuing to add to the problem because they want to see an AI baby version of Charlie Kirk dancing to Baby Boo. People who live near AI data centers barely have water to drink, and the ocean is so warm that coral reefs are at a point of no return, but sure, watch Erika Kirk get sturdy over her dead husband's grave.

When the current president got elected into office, he made a promise to the American people that he would release the files of what Jeffery Epstein documented on his island, which he was reluctant to do at first, seeing as his name was mentioned in the files more times than God was mentioned in the Bible. Everyone at the time knew that Epstein was a sick man who did awful things to children on the island, but no one knew how severe it was until the majority of the files were released to the public. If you haven’t seen or heard anything about what happened on the island, let me give you a few examples. Some victims were used as human incubators, never to see their child again; girls as young as 13 I believe were held at an auction; babies' intestines were eaten; even animals were abused on this island. And that’s just to name a few.
All of this is so sickening that I couldn’t bring myself to dive deep into the files because I knew I would puke from how absolutely disgusting and evil this behavior is. But you know what my generation is doing with this newfound information? Making AI videos of Jeffrey Epstein dancing to TikTok audios, putting “funny” reaction images in the comments of newly found information, and making it all about themselves. Hundreds, maybe even thousands, of CHILDREN were victims of everyone who went to a “pizza” party on Epstein Island, but people are making it about them since LifeTouch was supposedly giving out the photos they took of children out to the sex traffickers. It’s insane to me how everyone tries to say that this generation does not put up with tomfoolery, yet it seems that no one understands the intensity of this situation. We are not the generation that revolts; we are the most weak-minded generation yet.

At last, the ICE raids and attacks that are going on currently. ICE is currently illegally taking away undocumented immigrants from their families without even doing any background checks. They are going based on looks and sometimes even detaining legal citizens of the United States. They are going into elementary schools, family-owned restaurants, grocery stores, and more without any warrants to be there, simply taking anyone who resembles a person of color, specifically anyone who looks Hispanic. In recent events, people—citizens of this country—have been murdered in broad daylight: Keith Porter Jr., Renee Good, and Alex Pretti, just to name a few.
Many people from all around the country have been protesting against the unlawful ways and hypocrisy of this agency, and GenZ has been a part of these protests. Yet—as always—no one is taking anything seriously. Teenagers have scheduled walkouts from school to protest, but are posting social media videos about how happy they are to use this as an opportunity to skip school. They are making signs that reference memes, which is a popular way to make light of a bad situation, but it gets to a point where it is clear they don’t actually care and are just cracking jokes. Families are being torn apart, and the only thing anyone can think about is themselves.

Generation Z was supposed to be the generation of progressiveness. We were supposed to be the generation that flipped the script of the world and makes it a safe place for all. But instead of doing that, it seems we are experiencing a downfall of empathy and seriousness. Instead of being the generation of the left, we are more conservative than ever. We are a lazy generation; we are the definition of the bystander effect. Instead of caring about serious problems in our society, we are more focused on who won a Grammy or which celebrity got a BBL. Sitting around waiting for someone to do something is how the world collapses, and peaceful protests do not work against a hostile government. It is time to wake up before it’s too late.
