Swan
Diane Sanchez, April 2025

Gracefully
Elegantly
Seductively
Side by Side
Hand in Hand
Soft and Dark
Dancing in the limelight
The white swan
Gentle and feminine
Light and delicate
All that is good in the world
No?
Is she not?
Is there something else?
Lingering, unbeknownst to all
For the black swan is her
Is she not?
Hidden and locked away
Cunning and sensual
Traitorous and malicious
All that is bad and evil and monstrous in the world
But they are one and the same
Living within each other
I choke on the very heinous version of myself
Creeping out of my throat
And at night, she arises
Silencing the white swan, pure and sweet
And I feel something dark growing inside me
With a knife, desperately, try to cut it out
To kill it
It must die, mustn't it?
Every shard of glass reflecting what shouldn’t be known
The darkness muddying the light
It stains every inch of the white swan
Quick, wash it out
But it is embedded inside
It envelopes every part
Tugs and pulls and demands
Sacrifice
The dark settles, oh so beautifully
Every movement,
Desperate
Calculated
The swan cries out
But she still dances
And even in her death, she is ravishing
The curtains close
And all that is left?
Bloodied,
Gray,
feathers.
