STEven Universe Vs.
Adventure time

Ari Jackson, January 2023

After reading the title, you've probably already formulated your opinion and have picked a side. Steven Universe fans and Adventure Time fans are people one would assume to be very similar. However, declaring such would put you in the middle of a Twitter battle equivalent to a real-life war.
Now let's get down to the real business: 8 topics on which show concepts are more effective with accomplishing.

#1: STORYLINE: STEVEN UNIVERSE.

Although I love both, Steven Universe has consistently provided an ongoing storyline that never gets boring. The show is based off the enormous length of time that the story arcs cover, which is one of the things that makes it so appealing to the fans. Adventure Time, while it has stories, often breaks them up as if to make them more digestible. However, this has only been a deterrent for some.

#2: FIGHT SCENES: STEVEN UNIVERSE.

Additionally, both the shows have fights. But while Adventure Time and its world of warriors are greatly admired and hold a special place in our hearts, there is something special about the animation effort put into even the most minuscule fights in
Steven Universe. With the amount of art and imagination put into every battle, fans become captivated by the fight scenes; they are engraved in our minds for days or weeks. The simple action fights in Adventure Time are pleasing to see in the moment, but they eventually fade from memory.

#3: ANIMATION: ADVENTURE TIME.

On the point of animation, however,
Adventure Time takes the cake. They have a consistently developing style of animation, and you can see this throughout the seasons as the characters and the art itself evolve and come to life on the screen. By comparison, Steven Universe lacks in this area. As the need for more seasons and more episodes grew, it seems that the art within their animation began to recede: the animations became less complex to make it more efficient. Adventure Time’s changing style satisfies the need for variety and gives watchers something new to grasp onto every time a new season is produced.

#4: ADVENTURES: ADVENTURE TIME.

The adventures make the biggest difference in the show as well. There’s always some strange conflict that Jake and Finn need to solve. Throughout the whole ordeal, the creators maintain a sense of mystical humor, continuing to hold our attention for the entire episode. A perfect example: the adventure where Finn is transformed into a foot and goes on an adventure to find self confidence within himself and others who are just like him.

#5: VARIETY: ADVENTURE TIME.

Adventure Time maintains variety with its nonlinear storytelling, as there is a new adventure every week. New fans can come in and watch at any time without being completely lost within the story line. There is something new to explore every week, something fresh that will allow us as watchers to fall in love with the show all over again.

#6: WORLD-BUILDING: STEVEN UNIVERSE.

The random possibilities in
Adventure Time also have a disadvantage: they sometimes overpower the actual identity of the show. The details in Steven Universe give us an extended background and layout of the personalities/history of the characters, planet, and elements in total. It sets the show apart from any other show in the same genre and category.

#7: UNDERSTANDING OF MAGIC: STEVEN UNIVERSE.

Magic Systems in the
Steven Universe have a complex history. As we watch, we are introduced to different spells and concepts, but each gem power works differently. Over time, watching the show has taught me how to analyze and process the inner workings and power history of each gem. The powers, fusions, and Gems are left up to watchers' imagination simply because they are from such a complex and detailed magic system.

#8: SENSE OF HUMOR: ADVENTURE TIME.

Lastly, the humor in
Adventure Time is the heart of the series. The tone sets it apart from every other show; it has the ability to make anyone–adult or child–double over with laughter. Steven Universe may have some funny scenes, but the deep backstories and angst are more the focal point in comparison to Adventure Time. Lumpy Space Princess, Finn, and Jake never fail to make me laugh regardless whether they are separate or together, and the show brings life to my living room whenever it’s on.

In conclusion, Steven Universe and Adventure Time are both great shows, just in opposite ways.

They have made an impact on the lives of their watchers and will continue to hold a special place in their hearts, as well as in my own!
