Sonic 2

Isaiah Pinzino & Trinity Jones, June 2020

So, Sonic 2 just came out.

And it’s an absolute masterpiece.

In all seriousness, I have to say that this movie is definitely one of the best movies that I’ve seen all year. The story was great, the animation was absolutely on point, and it definitely felt like this movie came to life more than the first Sonic movie. I absolutely loved how the animated and real-life worlds meshed together
almost seamlessly, and how Sonic and Tails felt more human–almost more human than actual humans acting in the movie.

The story writing in this movie definitely seems more refined than in Sonic 1, building up Dr. Robotnik’s character as even more evil than it was before, especially once he acquires the Master Emerald. Everything from choosing the talented voice of Colleen O’Shaughnessy as Tails, to the personality of Knuckles, to some very subtle hints of romance between Robotnik and his assistant, Agent Stone. The wedding scene was absolutely hilarious, and the whole movie built tension without being corny (usually).

That being said, this movie is definitely meant to appeal more to fans of Sonic than to total outsiders, and while they do a great job of explaining most of the important plot elements that are ripped from the Sonic game series, there's some stuff they do sort of gloss over in an attempt to keep the OG Sonic fans from getting bored, like Golden Sonic and all of the emeralds. If you haven't seen the first movie or played the games, the emeralds, Tails, Knuckles, and Golden Sonic may seem like somewhat foreign ideas before you’re able to deduce what each en-Tails. The other thing that newcomers may not recognize is the end credits scene.

The end credits scene. I personally have no idea if I have ever been this hyped for a movie trilogy to finish after I watched it. I had kind of predicted that Shadow would show up either in this film or the third if there would be one, and if there was ever definitive proof of a third movie on the way, that was it.

In summary, I absolutely adored this movie and would recommend it to anyone who has played the Sonic games or seen the first movie. Well written, well animated, and well produced. I can’t wait to see when Sonic 3 comes out.

(Spoilers… obviously.)

I mean, how many times can you agree with a guy on a single topic? Several? As many times as the points that he makes? Isaiah is totally right. Sonic 2 was amazing.

Okay, okay. This is coming from someone whose favorite Pixar movies are the Cars franchise and who's really hyped for Super Pets, but Sonic 2 was like, incredible. I cannot imagine how much work all of the animators put into this movie to have it come to life like this. The first Sonic was great too, of course, but the whole animation and human thing has always been a bit weird in movies. But Sonic 2 seems to have completely mastered it, and I'm not sure if it's because of additional characters or simply because the writers got better, but this movie seemed much more natural than the first.

The relationship between Sonic and Tom felt much less forced and borderline artificial than it did in the first movie. When they said that they loved Sonic, I really believed it. Also, Sonic using his rings as a method of convenient transportation was hilarious. Imagine that your mom gives you these magical teleportation rings before she dies and entrusts the fate of the universe (or something of equal import, like Paramount films) to you, and about a year later, you start using them to help your adoptive parents go on vacation. Sonic is unhinged, and it's incredibly funny.
Picture
Him losing the rings towards the beginning of the movie, though? That just screamed "we're getting rid of this plot armor device so that the main character actually has to work at becoming a true hero in this movie and the next," and I'm so excited for that. I love it when writers put thought into the plot, and I love when plots translate well in theaters.

Also, y'all? Idris Elba as Knuckles? Knuckles as a character?

Hmmmm, anime fans, think Todoroki Shoto. Non anime fans, think… I don't know. Doctor Strange or something. Actually, scratch that, just watch Sonic 2 and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Knuckles was such a loveable jerkface (for lack of a better word). I liked him the whole way through, even though he did start off by punching Sonic (semantics). Idris Elba voiced the crap out of this role, and I think that Knuckles is one of my favorite animated characters of all time.
And then Tails. Sweet, shy, insanely genius Tails. I don't know what else to say other than "what an adorable, and smart, and also intelligent, but also adorable lil fox."

Regardless, yeah. What he said. Sonic 2? Definitely pirate it-- I mean see it completely legally on a big screen at AMC. You will not regret it.
