senior farewell
nina grice, may 2025

I am a senior in BALM, so, now, I have to write something to mark my unfortunate leave from this amazing club. I’m not really good at expressing my emotions. So, I am pretty sure you can understand how bad it will be now that I have to write, let alone about my emotions. However, BALM is different. I joined BALM last school year, and I have gained a lot of things. When I joined, I was strictly creative writing. At this point in my membership, I have written a couple of op-eds and a media review.

I joined BALM the same year I was in AP Language and Composition. That was when I first met Mr. Ejzak. It was my junior year, and I absolutely hated writing for anything related to school. I reserved my own writings and didn’t like sharing them with others. Mr. Ejzak’s class was a full reset for my brain chemistry. We were able to do choice essays where we got to pick topics we would like to write about. I was like: “Wow! This is nice!” I could really get in my element, and write something I would like to write in a school setting. Usually, I would be force-fed prompts and have to output a differentiated scramble of words that would just happen to sound good. But, not Mr. Ejzak’s class. My first choice essay was about the Large Hadron Collider—I am very proud of that one! Not only because of the work I did, but because it contributed to a positive experience in an English class.

I value my education which previous English classes didn’t provide me any growth. In Ejzak’s class, I got effective and really fun peer feedback where I got to yap happily and hear other people’s opinions. It was a great experience and an opportunity to read and see other people's inner workings and interests. Overall, Ejzak’s class really set the bar for my other English classes which is what led me to enjoy BALM so much. I can see so much of his class in BALM.

BALM was so beautifully created. I was in good spirits about joining because the sponsor was such an amazing teacher for me. All the people in BALM seemed so proud and happy. I know that other schools may have a newspaper, but I know it’s not like BALM. It’s because we are the BALM (the bomb :))! No, seriously! This community has provided me with so much community, support, and inspiration. I was able to write good articles because I knew that even if it wasn’t good I had the support to help me. In this club, I was able to come out of my shell and be able to prosper in something I never thought I would be good at. I have made friendships that mean a lot to me within BALM which has made these school years a lot better. I get to listen to others and hear about other people's days and interests—which I love! Even in my short time with BALM, I can feel the impact it has on its members because it has had such an effect on me. There is so much talent within BALM. I am so honored to be a part of something so special!
