TV Girl is an indie pop band that I’ve grown to adore in the past couple of years.
Since I wanted to, here are my top 10 TV Girl songs and why:
Since I wanted to, here are my top 10 TV Girl songs and why:
#10Number 10 for me has to be "Cigarettes out the Window" from the Who Really Cares album (arguably their most popular album) because it was one of the first TV Girl songs I ever listened to, and it has a special place in my heart because of that, despite it not being my all-time favorite anymore. It also has a wonderful beat and overall is easy on the ears.
A great starter song for new TV Girl fans. |

Number 9 for me is "Daughter of a Cop" from French Exit. While not the most memorable (in my opinion), it still worms its way into my top 10 because when I’m sick of listening to "It Almost Worked" and "Pantyhose" on repeat, it provides a nice break and is reliable to always be nice to listen to.

Speaking of "It Almost Worked," that’s my Number 8. While I wish it could be higher, it gets beat out by beauties such as "Heaven is a Bedroom," but I love it because the lyrics feel straightforward and the cover art is gorgeous. (I’m judging based on cover art, sue me.)
The song comes from the album “The Night in Question: French Exit Outtakes” for anyone who’s curious. |
Coming in at Number 7 is "Lovers Rock" from French Exit, another fairly popular song. While it might be overrated to some, the song gives me writing inspiration and the background music absolutely causes me to ascend, along with the film lines that were expertly mixed into the song and didn’t make it awkward at all.

At Number 6, "99.5" from Grapes Upon The Vine. Grapes Upon The Vine is one of their newer (and unfortunately less popular) albums released in 2023, and I adore "99.5" because it’s a nice change from the more mellowed vibes of French Exit and Who Really Cares, and also because there’s a cute little grape/raisin guy in the video of the song.

Number 5 is Pantyhose (it’s ALSO from French Exit, slowly realizing this is my favorite album) because it’s short, sweet, and terribly sad when you look at the lyrics. From my expert 8th grade interpretation, this song is about a guy who goes to war, takes his lover’s pantyhose and is protected from all harm when he puts them on, and he protects himself from heartbreak when his lover sends him a break-up letter by putting the pantyhose over his eyes.

Number 4 is "Not Allowed" from the Who Really Cares album. (we’re finally getting a break from French Exit). I associate this song with "Taking What’s Not Yours" for some reason, but this song is better to me than that one. I enjoy this song because of the intro and outro, and everything in between

#3Getting into the Top 3 at Number 3 is "Birds Don’t Sing" from French Exit. Another of their most popular songs, TV Girl once again cooked up an absolute masterpiece with this gorgeous song, and when I was in my “I kind of listen to TV Girl but not really” phase, I found myself enjoying this song more than "Cigarettes Out The Window" or "Loving Machine." I also consider it one of the steps I took into actually getting into TV Girl’s music outside of literally four songs.
|
#2Second to only one is "Hate Yourself," also from the French Exit album (I’m starting to notice a pattern) because I’m listening to it right now and the beat drop is actually so gorgeous, along with the pacing. The pacing of the song is top-tier and makes it feel like poetry, and I will never get over the beat. Ever. Listen to "Hate Yourself" if you don’t hate yourself.

#1
My Number 1 TV Girl song above all others is "Heaven is A Bedroom" from Who Really Cares. There is no way for me to accurately put into words how absolutely celestial this song is. When I listened to it for the first time, I absolutely detested my younger self for simply not being curious enough about TV Girl to go and find this absolute banger. At the same time, though, I’m glad I didn’t discover the song earlier and over-listen to it.
Honorable mentions
Now that I’ve ranked my top 10, I’d like to include some honorable mentions! Come When You Call from French Exit, Loving Machine from Who Really Cares, Taking What’s Not Yours (also from Who Really Cares), Jump The Turnstile and Lo on the Hi-Way from Summer’s Over, Natalie Wood, a single, and Daughter of A Cop and Anjela from French Exit.
Those are my top 10 TV Girl songs, and I’d recommend them to anyone looking for mellow, slightly romantic but more so sad music.
