For quite some time now, I have been addicted to this specific artist’s music. It really grabbed me by my collar, looked deep into my eyes and said, “We are one.” My attachment to this artist’s music is like those memes that are like “Headphones aren’t enough, the artist needs to be yelling in my ear.” Their music is excellent, and I genuinely would want to be friends with this person. The music is me. I am the music. I can relate a lot to 98% of the songs they write. This is very important to me because I find it really hard to express my emotions, so when I find music that aligns with who I am it is satisfying. If I was a musical artist, I would be them. I like their sound, message, beats, and voice. I follow them on Instagram and they seem like a very spiritual and benevolent person; hence, the reason why I would want to be friends with them.
You may be wondering who this person is. Her name is Elley Duhé--even her name is beautiful. Her birthday is on Valentine’s Day which explains a lot to me. Her birthday is a day before mine which is why I think we are so locked in. She is from Mobile, Alabama as well. I have noticed a good chunk of artists I like are from Mobile, Alabama. She seems like such a good role model. She is very emotionally intelligent which I strive for. She partakes in music (obviously), exercise, and adventure. She is just like me, but older, wiser, and prettier. A lot of my values align with hers--based on what I have seen in her music and Instagram posts. I understand that what is displayed on social media isn’t very reliable, but sometimes I just know divine intuition. Even then, this obsession isn’t really that bad. I think. I could be stalking her every move, trying to contact her at any point, and creating a parasocial relationship. However, I have self-control.
Enough of me fangirling, let's get to the music aspect. My favorite album of hers is Phoenix. The songs are incredible, and I can’t stop listening to them. If her music was a drug, I would have overdosed by now. Every time I listen, I feel like someone ripped the soul of my body and filled it with an overwhelming amount of joy and peace. I am put on a different plane of existence. Her songs can vary from the kind of message she is trying to get across and I resonate with most of them. I identify with this album. I will take a stamp and put “Phoenix” on all of my documents. My favorite song off of this album--this was difficult for me to choose--is called Champion. I get a bit of serotonin from the mere mention of the song. A couple of songs that I like fall behind in the order from second to fifth: Madness, Reborn, Overflow, and Color. The album has 15 great songs, so you would imagine the trouble I had.
The reasons why Champion is my favorite song are because of the message compared to the other songs, the sound compared to the other songs, and her vocal excellence. The message of the song is about solidity and sovereignty over any doubts about herself. She includes lines about her confidence in her capabilities and unanimity: “They've been starving/They want me”, “I'll never show no signs of letting up/It's in blood I'm a champion/I—no, I'll never ever give up/I got the heart of the champion[.]” She expresses that people “want her” and that she has the blood and heart of a champion. Being prized for being a triumphant person is a great example of solidity and sovereignty. She explains that she won’t give up and won’t be moved because it isn’t in her being. I find this very inspiring and motivating because I hope to be this sure and aware of my power. The champion abilities she is referring to is self-advocacy in the face of others rather than fighting for honor from others. Duhé includes how everybody wants her and that she “[knows] what it takes I take the lead[.]” She adds, “World falls on me/I gotta machine mentality/I'm on my spirituality/El go fire make 'em see” which leads me to believe that she is fighting a spiritual war as she involves verbiage of “Gotta be able to knock down the walls/Harness the fire and take 'em all to war” and ideas of her relationship with God. I love some spiritual and God references in songs. Spiritual warfare is a killer, so her explaining her resilience and resistance to giving up is comforting and empowering.
The music produced in this song is top-tier. Now, I am no expert musical composer, but I do know a good beat when I hear one. I can't describe the beat with my aforementioned lack of expertise. I will let you know that the beat is very relevant to the theme of power and war in the song. It gives off this medieval epic kind of vibe which is similar to the beat in her song “Other Side” whereas the medieval vibe is a lot more apparent. Elley Duhé’s vocals are out of this world. Especially compared to today’s music, her vocals are unique and weird--in a good way. Her vocals are a nice break from popular music. I like unique voices where artists experiment with their vocal capabilities. For example, I like Jack Stauber, Ado (Japanese artist), and Rozie Ramati.
