going away
chloe gadison, may 2025

I’ve seen the same walls for four years.
Somehow the school looks smaller than I first remember it.
I think it’s because I’ve outgrown the fairytale dream of making it to high school.
Every corner holds a different version of me.
I wonder what they would say if they could talk.

I walk past classrooms where I’ve met my greatest friends
And my worst enemies.
I walk past teachers who will soon forget my name.
I just hope maybe they won’t forget my face.
I walk past people who I smile at every day.
Deep down, we all know that we’re leaving each other behind.

I’ve been held down by the weight of unsaid goodbyes.
We will become strangers with shared memories
Or references in the stories that our grandchildren Might hear once or twice.
But that is the good thing about leaving high school.
Life doesn’t end with the experiences and people That you once knew.

There have been so many people I’ve met
And things I’ve witnessed.
Sometimes I look back at my old pictures and I can’t even recognize myself.
Truthfully, I spent the majority of my high school years finding myself.
And as life goes on, I will continue to.
Until I’ve achieved the life I know I can have.
Caps will fly, and so will I.
That is the beauty of going away.
