God, I love my city, my state, my country,
It's what makes me
But sometimes I wish there was less bigotry
Less animosity.
How do I claim to love a country
That doesn't value me?
Known for shooting guns every day
Like an independence party.
Or having all this money.
I could buy a gun
Is that what's impressive about me??
Do I speak aggressively,
Or with passion?
When do words I preach,
A 195-word speech
Become action?
Now I don't mean to scare
But do my words mean less ‘cause I care?
Is there anything I could do
To make you, too?
Waking up in a cold sweat
Countin’ so we won't forget
Every exit and hiding spot…
Do they care?! Probably.. not.
Maybe I should just be quiet…
As I was told to.
As a female.
As a black.
As a child.
We are so desensitized
That I could look you in the eyes,
Say American students pray
Every day
For themselves
For their peers,
And you’d look away.
But maybe all we can do is pray,
Hope my knowledge doesn't end in a riot.
Maybe I should just be quiet.
