Minali Brosnan, January 2023

The new season of Ginny and Georgia just dropped on January 5th, and it has been blowing up on TikTok. I just finished watching it and there are definitely some things to be said, whether good or bad. There are a lot of themes in this season that could potentially be triggering, including self-harm, eating disorders, and depression. There have been some very strong opinions on this show for both seasons, especially for me, so let’s get into it!

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SEASON 2!

Season 1

Season one of Ginny and Georgia blew up on TikTok. People either loved it or hated it. I was definitely on more of the hate side, and here’s why: With the exception of a few, I absolutely despised the characters. Ginny and her friends were totally insufferable, not to mention problematic. Abby and Norah literally blame Ginny for shoplifting because she’s Black. And don’t get me started on Max. Most of the time, the plot wasn’t even that bad, it was the writing. The misuse of slang and AAVE (African American Vernacular English) by primarily white characters was so cringey, and unfortunately, that aspect of the show didn’t end with Season 1. The entire season was just so bad and really made me hate the show. Thankfully, it got better in the next season.

Season 2

Season two was much better in my opinion, although not by much. I wasn’t expecting much from this season, considering the last one, but it was pretty good!

Plot

As I said before, the plot of the show is not bad at all, just a little all over the place! The development of Ginny and Georgia’s relationship was amazing, and it really helped the show a lot. In the first season, most of my annoyance with Ginny came from how she treated her mom. I don’t know about anyone else, but if my mom would literally kill her husband for touching me, I would be eternally grateful! I’m glad that Ginny finally came around to that fact. I was definitely surprised that Ginny told her dad about her self-harm in the first episode, but it wasn’t the biggest surprise the show would bring. The plot twists in the last couple of episodes of the show were insane, and surprisingly in a good way. I definitely did not see them coming, and I think they opened up for a potentially good season three, although knowing the writers of the show, they would probably fail completely.

Characters

I have a lot of problems with this show, but one of the biggest ones is the characters. I’m guessing the teenagers in this show are supposed to be echoes of Gen Z, but they just keep falling short. I guarantee that no one talks like how Maxine does in this season. For example, when Abby confronts Max about her behavior, Max replies with “You’re just going to walk in here like ‘It’s all good gang-gang?’” This snippet in particular went viral on TikTok because of how weird it is. Not only that, but it seems like everyone forgot about how Abby acted toward Ginny in the first season. The entire time, her only goal is to exclude Ginny from the friend group in any way possible. And in this new season, people are definitely overhyping her. She didn’t really add anything to the show, but for some reason everyone loved her.

That said, there are some characters that I really liked this season: for one, Zion, Ginny’s dad. He really did a fantastic job parenting her and was incredibly supportive throughout her battle with self-harm. Another one was Paul: he seemed to be the only rational character in this show that actually acted with thought to the future and how things might affect others. The final character that didn’t irk me one way or another was Bracia. I think she was the only sane high schooler in the show, who actually acted normally and had a crush on a guy.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, season 2 of Ginny and Georgia was definitely not as much of a mess as season 1 was, but there were still some annoying aspects. What can you do though, it’s just Netflix. Overall, I would rate this season a 5/10. It was a pretty good season, for Ginny and Georgia standards, but there is a lot of room for improvement. Hopefully, the next season will be much better in every aspect.
