Disclaimer: We do not hate Bryson Tiller. We love him & are big fans…. But this album was questionable.
This year R&B artist Bryson Tiller released his highly anticipated 7 song Christmas album “A Different Christmas”, but this album wasn't different. The problem with the album is that it sounds like one of his regular R&B albums and does not display a holiday spirit.
Saving of the Features
He featured artists Kiana Lede, Justin Bieber, Halo, & Tayla Parx. While Bryson’s songs sounded typical, the featured artists added something different to the music. On presents (featuring Kiana Lede), her voice spices up the song. Bryson’s tone is bland & unvarying, which is unbefitting for the song’s beat and theme of the album. Not to mention, this song, especially, sounds like one of his typical R&B songs. However, finally hearing a female voice in one of his songs adds a touch of something different. His song lonely Christmas (featuring Justin Bieber & Poo Bear) is slightly better in terms of the lyrical choices. It is more about Christmas than his song featuring Kiana Lede, and the change in melody also requires him to slightly alter his voice. Ain’t a lonely Christmas song (featuring Tayla Parx) is one of the better songs on the album, although his tone is still dull. We appreciate the beat and the more uptempo vibe that the other songs lack. His last song, Winter Wonderland (featuring Halo), is absolutely adorable because he includes his daughter in this track. It is disappointing that the last song on the tracklist is the best, but it truly understands the point of being a Christmas song. The song has a very familiar and warm feel, which we feel is essential to the holiday season. The songs without features are not good at all because his tone is repetitive, boring
Blinded By Bryson
One of the main reasons this album has received so much traction is not because it is a “good” Christmas album but because he is BRYSON TILLER. His fan base is stubborn that there is an automatic liking to his music. When reading comments on the album, we’ve noticed how blinded fans are because of his previous work. Comments like “ Ever since Trapsoul the holidays has been Tiller season,” “ summertime vibes,” “always love Tiller.” Most comments about this album are not towards the actual quality but the general aspect of him being Bryson Tiller, and regardless of what he puts out, it will always be considered “good
Stick to the Basics
The album is not all bad. Ain’t a lonely Christmas & winter wonderland are the best songs on the album, while the rest fall short of understanding the assignment. The other songs have monotonous tones that do not give a holiday feel. The main problem here is that Christmas albums by artists like Mariah Carey have set the bar so high for newer artists. Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas is an iconic Christmas album that will forever be played during the holiday season. Bryson, however, will not be able to relate. Winter wonderland was very popular on TikTok due to his daughter’s addition to the song, but the album will never come up in a conversation of “best christmas albums.” His efforts are greatly appreciated, but he doesn’t have the voice to produce a quality Christmas album.
