Season 2

kyndal godbold, april 2022

After Bridgerton took the world by storm in December of 2020, it was announced that there would be 7 more seasons following the book series. So next up would be Anthony’s story. This season did take a while longer to come out with COVID-19 stopping production twice, but the season did not disappoint. Everything from the casting, makeup, wardrobe, and set design was seemingly better than season one. The chemistry between Kate and Anthony was on fire from the first time they met on horses in the garden. Even though their relationship was a true slow burn, it did give the audience exactly what they wanted.

Spoilers ahead

Picture
The season opens up with the family preparing Eloise for her season, which she of course does not want to participate in. This is also when we meet our new characters: Lady Mary and her daughters, Kate and Edwina Sharma. We also met the new Lord Featherington and Theo Sharp, who I want to be Eloise’s new love interest. This is also the season that Anthony wants to find a wife, and when Edwina becomes “the diamond of the season,” Anthony sets his sights on her. Little does he know her sister Kate will do anything to not have Anthony marry her. This creates one of my favorite tropes: “Enemies to lovers.” The audience also got to see more of Penelope being Lady Whistledown and her struggles with keeping her identity a secret from her best friend.
During this article, I will go through my top 3 moments from the season.

3. Eloise confronts penelope

Picture
In season one when it was revealed that Penelope was Lady Whistledown, I wondered how long this secret would be kept by her best friend, Eloise. During this season, Eloise continued her hunt for Lady Whistledown, and Penelope continued to lead her the wrong way. I knew that as Eloise got closer to figuring out her identity, she would eventually get hurt from knowing who she is. Especially since they were such close friends and a lot of the information she revealed was personal to the Bridgerton family.

The reveal was well executed and shocking at the same time. During the ball scene, when Eloise was able to finally see how Penelope was watching other people and talking about them, it was like the “AH HA” moment we had all been waiting for. She finally was able to see what the audience was viewing, and it felt very rewarding.

2. the wedding

Picture
A Bridgerton wedding is never really a wedding unless everything goes wrong. The Queen has offered to pay and host Edwina and Anthony’s wedding, and I’m sorry she did. I loved the opposition:  Edwina preparing for her wedding day with her mother and sister with excitement, and Anthony treating it like a normal day and prepping with his brothers. It also continues to be a little awkward between the sisters after Edwina learns about the deal Kate made with their grandparents. The wedding also happens after Anthony says to Kate “you are the bane of my existence, and the object of all my desires,” so the tension between the two is very high.

During the wedding, Edwina notices the stares being shared between Anthony and Kate and starts to question the relationship they have. Her confusion is then turned into realization when Kate drops her bracelets on the ground and Anthony goes to help her. Edwina notices what is happening and runs out of the wedding. She is filled with anger and yells at Kate for never telling her about her feelings. This is when Edwina suddenly transforms into an adult and understands what has been happening all along. I loved seeing this side of Edwina and a scared version of Kate. At the end of the episode, we also get to see the first kiss between Anthony and Kate.

1. "You are the bane of my existence....."

Picture
Where do I even start with this scene. It was just, WOW. There is no doubt that this is one of everyone’s favorite scenes from the season. I had no idea where this scene was going because there were so many slow burn moments between Kate and Anthony, and I thought this would just be another one. I did not expect Anthony to go from completely degrading her to complimenting and seducing her. Needless to say, I loved it. The chemistry, the tension the acting, the music– *chefs kiss*.

This scene solidified my feelings for the focus of the love interests in season 2 being better than season 1. Kate and Anthony barely had any physical contact unlike Daphne, but the audience was still able to feel their love for each other. You can feel the passion and desire they have for each other with just a few words and barely any touching. It leads the audience to want more from them, just like Kate and Anthony want from each other. There were fewer scenes between the two than Daphne and Simon, but it made the audience enjoy every single encounter, even the small ones, even more.

honorable mentions

the bee sting

Picture
Even though the scene was executed differently than it played out in the book, I still enjoyed it. The audience got to see how much Anthony truly cared for Kate and how much baggage he holds from his father’s death.

anthony hears how kate is doing after her fall

Picture
This is by far one of my favorite moments from the entire season. I enjoyed watching the relief come over Anthony’s face when he hears how Kate is doing, and watching him emote for the first time after his father’s death. It was another example of how much he loved her.

the bridgerton family dance

Picture
When Anthony asks Hyacinth to join him for a dance and you see her excitement, you can’t do anything but smile. The audience gets to see how much Hyacinth and Gregory see Anthony as a father figure and enjoy spending time with him. I also could not stop smiling while watching the entire family dance together. You could tell that the cast was having so much fun filming the scene.

benedict high at dinner

This scene was hilarious and brought a nice piece of comedy to the season. I love Benedict and it made me more excited to see him in upcoming seasons.

eloise and theo

Picture
Before this season, I was not sure what Eloise would look like with a love interest, but after season 2, I know that I want her to have one. Theo Sharp was a true match for her in every way possible. I hope that they end up together and not put her with who she was paired with in the book.
