Best Socks, Ranked

 TRINITY JONES, january 2023

If you know me, you know that socks are serious business. There was a dark period in my life where I didn't wear socks and my shoes stank like hell, but I'm a changed woman now. No longer am I a sock snubber, stifled under the sound of bare feet slapping against the stairs. No, no. I love socks. I'm a sock enthusiast. And today, I'm going to teach you about the best kinds of socks, ranked worst to best.

Worst - No Show Ankle Socks

Oh my God, I hate these socks. I can’t think of anything more annoying than walking around and having my socks roll down underneath my feet every two seconds. It’s so uncomfortable; it feels like walking with something in your shoe. They do look nice with flats, but I’d honestly rather go sockless.

7. Sky Zone Socks

Or any kind of grippy socks, really. Yes, they’re convenient for not slipping on hardwood, but they’re not good for much else. You know something else that’s annoying? When your sock is stuck to the ground, but your foot is sliding around inside of it. It absolutely sucks. Keep them at the trampoline park, people.

6. Over- the- Knee Socks

These socks are so cute, but the tradeoff is having them roll down your thighs every five seconds if you’re bigger than a size 2 in jeans. Of course, they still look cute as knee highs, but if that’s not the vibe I’m going for, it’s incredibly irritating. Whenever I get some over- the- knee socks that won’t stay (or fit), well, over- the- knee, it’s sorely disappointing.

5. Ankle Socks

Now we’ve reached the top five of socks, where there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with the socks, but there are some that are better than others. Ankle socks are mid, honestly. My grandma has excellent taste, so she can find ankle socks with prints on them. And they’re great for walking around the house in, but they just don’t have enough character. They’re perfect for the summer time, but that’s only if you’re wearing socks!

4. Knee-high Socks

Knee-high socks are really nice, and I was absolutely obsessed with them for a while. They’re super cute, and they keep you warm when you’re walking around a slightly chilly house in shorts! They also have excess room for prints and great designs. Everyone should own a pair of these.

3. Mid-calf Socks

Mid-calf socks are some of the best types of socks out there. They’re the perfect length and they can have really nice designs on them (that can actually be seen by people!!!). Even if they aren’t warm materials, they’re nice for layering under boots or pants when you don’t want your legs and ankles to feel too bulky.

2. Knitted Socks

Knitted socks are the best socks for layering under boots and pants in the winter time. They’re not too thick, but they’re still super warm, soft, and comfortable. Honestly, the only downside is that they’re hard to find. You’re free to stock up on as many pairs as you like once you find them, though. Regrettably, I only own one pair of this type of socks, but I’m working on building my collection as we speak.

Best - Fuzzy SockS

Honestly, if you don’t own a pair of fuzzy socks, what are you doing? I know that I just said that knitted socks are the best for layering under boots, but these work just as well (if not better). On top of that, they also have cute patterns, they’re a good theme for school spirit days, and they go well under boots and over pants (like how I’m wearing them right now!). They’re nice to wear around the house, outside in the cold, and at school when you want to feel comfy without coming to school in full-blown pajamas (which fuzzy socks also pair fairly well with). Seriously, if you don’t own fuzzy socks, you need to head to Old Navy and buy some right. Now.

Since I’m so geeked about fuzzy socks, I’ll also give you a cheat code and tell you that World’s Softest Socks are the best fuzzy socks brand out there. They’re snug, thick, and (as the name suggests) incredibly soft.

Are you a sock enthusiast like me? Or are you a sock hater, doomed to never enjoy the soft comfort of socks on your feet? Let me know!

(Oh my God, World’s Softest also sells knitted socks… I am about to go so broke.)
