Media reviews are well known for studying a TV show, or analyzing the themes and aspects of a great movie, or maybe even doing a deep dive and lore run on one’s favorite character. But this media review is on a song that helped change my definition of music. It really made me reflect on so much in the short time I heard the first few seconds of the beat; it captivated my mind, like an endless symphony of emotions flowing through every inch of my body. From my ears to even my eyes, I could visualize the vision of the instruments and see the orchestration of this piece. And I really did Wonder.
Why did he create such a beautiful piece of music? I don’t typically like listening to rappers, or listen to music even close to this. But the moment I did, I was hooked.
"I Wonder" by Kanye West from his graduation album is a musical masterpiece. It infuses a mix of both happy emotions, sad emotions, simplicity, and complex coordinations of music rhythms.

From the beginning, he starts repeating to himself that he wonders. And through the whole song, it continues, repeating that he wonders if you know what it means. It starts and even finishes with that; even when he’s not saying the words, it’s the words turned into a beat that sounds like a futuristic keyboard sound. And it mimics the thoughts of wondering from the start of your life, to even the future. Even when you find what you think is your dream, you will still wonder till the day you die if you found your dreams.
Kanye West was asked why he made the song the way he did, and he stated that he made it this way to make people reflect and think more about themselves. This piece is filled with nothing but intention. To the lyrics, to the beat, to the chorus, to the melody. It’s all symbolic.

Moving from the beat and melody, the lyrics are all so beautiful.
“You say I think I’m never wrong,” and he says, “Maybe you’re right,” showing accountability, because when you wonder about every action you take, and wonder about chasing your dreams, you actually find how you really feel. Or even “you say he gets on your f***ing nerves, you hope he gets what he deserves”
But then he adds, “Do you even remember what the issue is, you just trying to find where the tissue is.” It’s so carefully written to show how people act terribly during heated arguments. And later regret their decision. Because they probably can’t even remember why they’re upset. They just stay upset because they were.
“You can still be who you wish you are, it ain’t happened yet, and that’s what intuition is.” Wondering again and again is you chasing your ambitions, even if you don’t think it is; each thought you make helps you get closer to your goals and dreams. Kanye West also said he chose not to have as much rapping in this song, because it’s supposed to create that room for reflection and thinking about yourself and your own dreams.
“Will you hop back in the car, drive back to the crib, and run back to their arms, the smoke screens, the chokes, and the screams,? Do you wonder what it all really means?” This is a metaphor for going back to someone over and over again, even after arguing and having bad past experiences. What is that experience? To be so upset at someone, yet come right back because you care so much about them. The smoke screens, chokes, and screams are then hidden hurt feelings.
Then, directly after, he goes back to his repeating of wondering.

Then Absolute Cinema happens, and the Futuristic Keyboard sound effect starts blasting. The bridge begins so powerfully; this wondering soundtrack is so loud, and the way the chorus is played in a different tone is so empowering, and it really grabs your attention.
Saying he’s back on his grind, a psychic read his lifeline told him in his timeline. That his name would help light up the Chicago skyline. Symbolizes making it big in life, lighting up the Chicago skyline with a billboard showing how successful he was, while also helping light up the skyline, inspiring people.
And that’s why “And I wonder” because wondering and second-guessing yourself is the way you’ll actually make it out ok in life.
“Seven o'clock, that’s prime time”
Heaven’ll watch,
God calling from the hotlines.”
“Why does he keep
giving me hot
lines”
“I’m a star, how
Could I not shine?”
This part just flows so rhythmically, and it really shows who he is as a person and even relates to his personal morals. A famous quote by Kanye West is
“Keep your nose to the sky, keep your heart to god, and keep your face to the rising sun.
I feel like I'm too busy writing history to read it. I am God's vessel.
But my greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform live.”
He needs to stay away from looking up and worrying about making it, with God there for him. He knows that things will be alright. And he knows how powerful his music is, so not being able to enjoy himself is the worst pain of them all. With all of his wondering, he does, if only his own words could help him out.

“You ever wonder what it all really mean?”
“You wonder if you'll ever find your dreams?”
Do you wonder why people do this? Argue, fight, and make up so easily.
Do you ever think you aren't good enough, or second-guess yourself?
After you have kids, “make it in life”, and get to your dreams.
Wonder if you know what it all really means.
Wonder if you’ll truly find your dreams.
And I wonder….
