As most people know, the new show Wednesday recently came out on Netflix. This show follows the main character, Wednesday, as she goes through high school at Nevermore Academy (which was the place where her parents, Morticia and Gomez Addams, went when they were her age). I won’t actually be talking about what the show is about, but more so about the main characters and what they were like throughout the entirety of the show. There will be spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the show I recommend not reading this.
Wednesday Addams:
We start off the series by seeing that Wednesday is at a normal school and trying to protect her brother, Pugsley, because the water polo team has stuffed him in a locker. This leads her to throw piranhas in the pool while the whole team is practicing. Wednesday’s parents then decide to move her to Nevermore Academy, which is also conveniently the school where they went.
During her time there, Wednesday grows as a character and lets herself open up to all different kinds of people. She really does hate it at first, but then she learns to love it because of the people that are with her. We can see that she finally begins to trust people and even truly love them in a way that she didn’t think was possible (even though she wrongly accuses others of being the hyde, a shapeshifting monster). Wednesday is also having these visions that allow her to see different things that have happened at any moment in the past. These visions are what allows her to express herself because they show her who people truly are.
I feel like the most special time for her was at the very end. The reason is that she took an arrow for Xavier. This really shows how she grew to trust and eventually love the people in her life.

Tyler Galpin:
We start off the series by seeing that Tyler is like “the boy next door” type of guy. He seems really sweet and like a really loveable person. As the series progresses, however, we start to see that he is different than first thought: he starts to act mysterious, as if there is something wrong with his personal life. There are still times when he seems like a normal person because he acts like a normal teenager who just wants to become independent. As the show progresses, we can see that he really likes Wednesday, even if she doesn’t actually reciprocate those feelings. Later, we find out that Tyler was the monster (a.k.a. the hyde) all along. This leads most people to believe that he was using Wednesday to get ahead with his plan. We later find out that it was actually Thornhill that manipulated him into transforming and making him become her own servant to do her own bidding for her master plan.

Xavier Thorpe:
Xavier is first seen as the stereotypical “bad boy” in every romance movie. He is looked at as a strong and independent person simply because he doesn’t really talk to anyone when the series begins. In the earlier episodes, we can see that he is truly developing feelings for Wednesday in the same way as Tyler. The only difference between him and Tyler is that Wednesday doesn’t actually choose him until the very end. When I feel like I saw the most character development from him was when they were at the Rave’N dance. He had asked Bianca to use her siren powers to make him forget about Wednesday since he was jealous that she was dancing with Tyler and not him. I feel like this really shows that he was willing to let go of the girl that he liked just so that he could see her happy. Since I’m a hopeless romantic, this seems really cute because I feel like it shows how he puts the people that he loves over himself.

Marilyn Thornhill/ Laurel Gates:
We start off the series by seeing that Ms. Thornhill is the first “normie” teacher and the “dorm mom” of Ophelia Hall, which is where Wednesday’s dorm was located. Right away she seems like the mother figure that we all wanted because it seemed like she truly cared about her students and actually listened to them. I definitely know that she would’ve been my favorite teacher if I went to Nevermore because she actually talks to and connects with her students.
As we get deeper into the series, though, we can see that she is not the person she seems to be. She seems as if she’s hiding something because she always happens to show up at the right time. Towards the end, we find out that Marilyn Thornhill was just a disguise; her real name was Laurel Gates. Although she was presumed dead, it came out that she actually faked her death in order to gain access to Nevermore. We find out in the very last episode that she manipulated Tyler into transforming into the hyde so that he could collect different body parts to bring back her ancestor Joseph Crackstone (who was known for trying to make all outcasts, the kids who went to Nevermore, extinct). |
Enid Sinclair:
Enid is the bubbly best friend that everyone loves because she is never fake to anybody. I feel like she actually gives us a reason to love every person because she just mainly sees the good in people. An example was the Rave’N when she decided to trust a normie who was known to bully outcasts and go to the dance with him. She is someone who truly brings out the best in people because she is the person that helps Wednesday to come out of her shell and actually trust people. She is the reason why every character has some kind of growth since she never lets them forget that they are special.

Joseph Crackstone:
Joseph Crackstone is the ancestor that wanted to get rid of all outcasts. He wanted to make sure that the world was safe from them, and he was going to do it in any way possible. Before he had the chance to do this, Wednesday’s ancestor Goody Addams ended up placing a blood curse on him that allowed him to be reborn with the blood of a living descendant and the blood red moon. As stated before, Thornhill brings him back to life in order to continue his mission. What they don’t see coming is that Wednesday defeats them and they both die. Crackstone always seemed like the type to be the leader, but in reality, he was just someone who wanted all the power in the world.

Larissa Weems:
Over the course of the show, it doesn’t really seem like anything changed with Weems. She didn’t have the character development that most characters go through, but that’s what makes her so special. Weems made it her mission to protect Nevermore no matter what the cost was. She would have done anything in her power to make sure that the school stayed open and in business. Even though she didn’t have the best experience at Nevermore when she was a student, she never lost the love that she had for the school. When she finally finds out that it was Thornhill controlling the hyde, she made it her mission to get her arrested for her crimes against the school. But before she could complete that mission, Thornhill killed her. When everything is over, we can see that she was a truly loved person by many people.
