always

trey sherrod, september 2025

she irritates me to the bone, but i don’t play about that girl at all. even if she feels she needs protection from me, i’ll protect her from the world in ways she can’t see. even if my efforts go unnoticed, she’s the muse and i’m the poet. i know her soul like i wrote it, so of course i would take notice if her world crumbled underneath my pen. i’ll say it now how i’d said it then: there’s no me if she’s not within.

i couldn’t be without. she’s not just water to a drought, she’s the roof to my house and the soul that makes my house a home. so even if she never picks up the phone and she leaves permanently, i have promises to keep. even if i have to use people to get her her favorite things and she never knows it’s from me. even if she never talks to me again, my devotion runs deep. love not just four letters, but for it to be only four letters, love is complete. love is commitment. so when i said i love you, i meant it. i can’t control the narratives or the things you believe, but i can always show up as me.

regardless of the state of our relationship you’ll always have refuge. you irritate me to the bone but i could never refuse you. i could never erase you. i’ll always be accessible and if say the word, i’ll always choose you. because i’ll always love you like i was always meant to.
